PlayStation 4’s Driveclub Delay Not Due To VR Says Shuhei Yoshida

PlayStation’s President of Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, has put to bed rumours that PS4 racer Driveclub – originally scheduled for release alongside the console last year – has been delayed due to the recently revealed Project Morpheus.

Sony’s virtual reality headset, unveiled earlier this week, has long been thought as one of the reasons for Driveclub’s ongoing delays, but speaking to Gamespot Yoshida squashed said rumours, commenting that developer Evolution Studio are currently “not working on [Project] Morpheus at all” as they push to finish the game ahead of it’s tentative ‘Spring’ release.

“There’s a rumor about the reason of the pushback of Driveclub was to make it Morpheus compatible…that’s totally untrue,” Yoshida said.

Shuhei also discussed how – earlier in its development cycle – Evolution worked on implementing Sony’s VR tech into their new game, and the questionable results they encountered. Yoshida is reported to have said the game worked well at low speeds, but when in a high-octane racing environment became “kind of difficult and sickening” – which is almost certainly not what Evolution wanted from Driveclub.

  1. “as they push to finish the game ahead of it’s tentative ‘Spring’ release.”

But the Internets said it was back to the drawing board, and it will never be released.

  2. Such a frustrating wait this one, with bare minimum info on it.

  3. I still think it’ll be worth the wait, just a shame it wasn’t ready for launch or at least pre-holiday season.

  4. I suspected that rapidly moving images would that close to your eyes would be a problem with the VR set. Rules out a lot of games.

    • Isn’t vr also 3d? If so driveclub at 30fps would be 15fps per eye – not very nice and unsurprising that the brain gets really confused.

    • Aye. We’ve been mastering LCD technology for years and 60Hz screens pumping out 60FPS is lovely. However, it’s still only part of our field of view which grounds the action and also there’s no head-lolling/swinging about (unless you play GT5 drunk or something!). :-)

I’m assuming head-tracking would have be to almost instantaneous so as to not upset the natural (and native) balance we all have when carrying out the most basic of tasks. Once again… potentially sober. :-)

  5. I wouldn’t have thought Project Morpheus would be the cause of the delay as it’s still at the prototype stage and won’t be ready for release for ages. Anyway if Evo Studio want Driveclub to have Project Morpheus support surely they could patch the game after release.

  6. I suspect that Driveclub will be released sometime before the end of May.

  7. Driveclub! Ahhhhhhhhhhh, I remember that game. Well, I remember previews of it.

It’s the vernal equinox today so the clock is counting on their ‘Spring’ release window.

  8. Well, hopefully Sony won’t delay (or later patch in VR support to )any PS4 game, unless it really ‘works’ with VR.No point just having i there as a tick box so you can list X amount of games that support it, in order to try and shift VR headsets.

Hopefully the delays to Club drive are being used to ensure game really stands out and delivers what potential buyers want, in terms of gameplay (i’m so not touching that 60 FPS issue, no..not at all).

If it’s another PS4 game that only really teases direction developers wanted to go (cough, Killzone, Infamous) guess lot of people will be angry they had to wait so long.

    Time will tell….
