Borderlands is heading off Pandoran soil, with a prequel to the second game set on the moon of the planet, Elpis, according to GamesPointsNow. It’s only PS3, Xbox 360 and PC, and it’s billed as a pre-sequel due to it being set in the five year gap between games.
It’s allegedly being developed by 2K Australia rather than Gearbox, and will see you taking on the Hyperion base on the moon, with Handsome Jack returning in the days before his villainy, as a programmer named John who is hunting an evil artifact.
You’ll play as one of his four lieutenants including Athena the Gladiator, Wilhelm the Enforcer, Nisha the Lawbringer and Fragtrap, who is a militarised version of Claptrap. These characters have all made appearances before in the games, with Athena in the General Knoxx DLC, Wilhelm appearing as a boss in Borderlands 2, and Nisha resembling the sheriff of Lynchwood from Borderlands 2.
Athena will be melee-focused and have a plasma sword and shield, while Wilhelm will have a shoulder-mounted cannon and drones which he can call in. There will also be new types of weapons including Laser and Cryo, and the low gravity will bring a new mechanic to proceedings.
Low gravity means more verticality in the gameplay, and of course with that comes jetpacks, which comes alongside the management of oxygen. You’ll have to collect OX-Kits to keep this at a decent level, but headshots mean smashing of helmets and instant death.
It seems as though the game will be announced properly soon, but GamePointsNow have reliably leaked PlayStation Plus titles in the past, and all of the information seems legitimate enough.

Boo, wanted a next gen Borderlands.

Agreed, I’m very disappointed with Gearbox software. Then again I have my catalogue of Plus games and other PS3 games to keep me busy until then.

More interested in updates on the vita version of Borderlands 2 currently. Well, that and next gen obviously.

… & yet, this is great news for me!
Go figure. :)

I don’t see any reason not to do a next-gen version, even if it’s a bit delayed. They’ll already have the graphical upgrades from the PC version, and it’s easier to port than to 360/PS3, and it shouldn’t hurt sales.
But it proves that it’s still worth holding onto the old systems. Setting sounds interesting.

No PS4? Balls mate.

Feels like I’ve been playing Borderlands 2 for ages but I’m not even half way. These games are way too long. Not too fussed if the next Borderlands isn’t coming to PS4. I’ll be keeping my PS3 as long as I need to.

Its more disappointing that the severely outdated consoles are still supported. They seriously need to go.
