CM Punk was one of the WWE’s biggest stars in the last few years, competing in a number of main events and also winning the WWE Championship and WWE World Heavyweight Championship a total of five times combined. However earlier this year CM Punk left the organisation on less than friendly terms, breaching his contract in the process. Over the last few months the wrestler has made clear that he will never return to the WWE either, which has made his image a legal issue for the company.
It’s now being reported that the WWE hasn’t paid the wrestler royalties for using his image in WWE 2K15, though development on game did begin before CM Punk left the company. The wrestler’s lawyers have apparently sent a 22 page document to show this is the case, and must be addressed. Do not confuse this with CM Punk suing the brand, but more of a demand for payment. This will go back to who owns the rights to the CM Punk image, with the obvious answer being the wrestler himself. However, the WWE may use the argument that agreements were made for CM Punk to appear in the game before he left.
We’ve contacted the WWE for a statement on the issue.
