PlayStation 4’s 2.0 Firmware Features Explained In New Video

Last week Sony released a video explaining what the Share Play was, and how it would work once it released on the PS4. Today the company has released another video this time showing how the other inclusions of firmware 2.0 will work, including the USB Media Player, Youtube uploads, and the improvements to the broadcasting options. One of the main additions in broadcasting will allow you to follow streamers, and see their archived footage as well as have them on the Featured broadcasts tab when they’re live. You can also select a specific game to see streams for.

The video also has a quick look at themes, which will be downloadable fro the PlayStation store, and also the fact that you will now also be able to pause downloads. The party system will also seem some improvements with less clutter on the screen, and the in chat menu now appearing on the right hand side of the screen. There will also be new voice commands to navigate the console too.

Firmware 2.0 will release tomorrow, October 28th.

  1. Pausing downloads is my most anticipated feature. It’s quite unbelievable that this wasn’t implemented from the get go. A very strange (and poor) decision from Sony.

    • I agree, I was looking to pause a download the other day and was surprised that it wasn’t possible.

      • I believe there’s a ‘hack’ for that, not that it will matter after tomorrow ;) – disable internet connection and when you re-enable, the download is stopped and can be retried later.

      • Yeh I read that but it seems so convoluted that I just couldn’t be bothered with it.

      • chuffed we can now pause :)

  2. did seem strange.you could do it on ps3 why they left it out on ps4 is beyond me.
what ever happened to the play the game why you are downloading it gimmick?

    • You can do that, with varying degrees of success depending on the game.

DriveClub implements it rather well. 2 or 3 GB to download first, then you can start playing the first events. Later events even give you an estimated time before they’re downloaded, and the option to prioritise that event.

Obviously there’s a couple of gig to download first, but that was inevitable. Much better to wait 15 minutes than a couple of hours.

  3. Top update, looking forward to it.

Will have to sort myself a dedicated USB stick with some tunes.

Folders for games/apps next please Sony!

  4. DLNA! I need this ASAP before I spend too much money on an Xbone for this feature alone!

    • yes, this is badly needed.

    • both my 360 and ps3 are still hooked up to my game telly as i have some other games still to finish. if thats the only feature you want, much cheaper to plug one of those in :)

  5. Allowing me to follow streamers is my most anticipated feature. What else would I want to when my PS4 is switched on?

    • I’ve never understood this whole thing to be honest. It’s a waste of time.

  6. Shareplay looks spectacular but this video is a bit of a let down as it explains some features I won’t use much or at all, what I was most interested in was the sorting options for the main menu… ah well, only a few days until we can try them for ourselves I suppose.

  7. The MP3 player seems a bit barebones – functional, but i will miss PS3’s Earth visualiser. I’m also not sure why they only allowed eight proscribed colours for the background – i was really hoping for black! ;)
On the whole though it looks like a really solid update, especially for the live streaming and sharing side of things.
I read a comment on neogaf (let’s take this as rumour for now) that the webkit which PS4’s UI is based on has recently had an update and Sony have been waiting for that so they could include it in firmware 2.0. And now that the updated webkit is integrated into the PS4 UI, it should allow them to rollout future changes and additions within a shorter timeframe. I won’t hold my breath on that one but let’s see..

    • I read something similar elsewhere that this is big “under the hood” update to allow for easier addition of further improvements. Fingers crossed but breath not held.

  8. As others have said there is a few requested features missing but it’s a good start. Here’s hoping Sony keep up the good work.

  9. Can you plug in a MP3 player, like the Sony Walkman, or just a USB stick to use the USB Media Player?

    • Hmm, surely a phone in mass storage USB mode would work. Its where 99% of my music is.

    • That is an excellent question. I assume that it reads anything with a compatible formatted drive, so you should be able to plug in an MP3 player. But that’s a guess, I’ll see if I can find out.

      • If you cannot find out I’ll just stick my Walkman in the USB port tomorrow after installing the update and see what happens.

      • Tried to plug in walkman but wouldn’t fit into the PS4’s USB socket, too much plastic in the way.

  10. Also the second player is limited to 720p for the resolution lovers!
