Sony has confirmed that sub accounts can now be upgraded to master accounts. The sub accounts have been put in place for those under the age of 18, and have to be linked to a master account of an adult. While sub accounts could do the majority of things a master account can there are some restrictions in place, including purchasing certain content like games with 18 ratings. These accounts can also not see the What’s New or Live From PlayStation content on the home screen of the PS4.
If you do have a sub account and are now over 18 you need to follow the steps below to make it a master account.
- Sign in to the sub account through the SEN website or the PlayStation App.
- Go To Account Settings.
- On The Account Management page click on Upgrade Your Account.
- Agree To The Terms Of Service
- Sign out then back in.
- Account should now be Master.
You can’t do this through the Account Management option on console, and the original master account holder is not needed to complete the upgrade. Once done there is no way to reverse the process, and parental controls will be deactivated. Items that were purchased using the orignal sub account, including games, will transfer over but if games were purchased using the original master account then they will stay linked to that. These will not transfer to the new master account.

This is great news. Lying in bed trying to do this on phone / iPad, and cannot see how to do this. Am I missing something, or will have to wait till I get up and do it on desktop pc?

Has anyone managed to do this and sign in to Facebook/Twitter. Every time I go to settings, link other services, it says cannot communicate with server so I can’t enter my log on details. However, on the 2 master accounts that have always been master accounts, there is no problem! Very frustrating!!

Awesome! Now I’m going to:
a) spend what’s left on my master account wallet
b) upgrade my sub-account I use as my main account
c) cancel my Plus renewal
d) get Plus for my newly upgraded sub-account!
c) finally be able to download Plus games to my Vita!

YAY! I can finally upgrade my sub account that i’ve not used since i was a teenager to a master account and have 3 PSN accounts! YAY!
Sony, what the hell took you so long? If you modified PSN so that i can switch emails or link all accounts to one email account then i would be happy. I am not as i no longer have access to two email accounts linked to two PSN accounts and i would prefer to be able to change email addresses instead of having to create a new email account for a new PSN account.
