Battlefield Hardline Runs At 900p On PS4, 720p On Xbox One

Battlefield 4 was one of the first games available on PS4 and XBO, and the small disparity in resolution on the two platforms remained a talking point for those looking for the small differences in hardware performance.

Today, we learned that the final resolution for Battlefield: Hardline will be exactly the same as it was for Battlefield 4 on the new consoles, according to a tweet from Visceral in response to another user’s question.

Just as it was on Battlefield 4, unless you put the two side-by-side it’s unlikely you’ll be able to tell the difference, but it does show that a small disparity still remains in hardware capabilities for each platform, even after Microsoft squeezed out a little extra juice for developers.

  1. Should we really be focusing on the difference between the consoles or that neither can manage 1080p?

    • Oh, the both consoles can manage 1080p alright, as seen by other games. It’s the game developers that need to figure out how. :)

      • This, although it still feels really early in the current consoles life cycle to be getting anywhere near their actual potential. Look at the first Uncharted and compare it to TLOU for a prime example.

    • Doesn’t the Microsoft platform parity clause that says if you want Microsoft to publish games on any Xbox console or games for windows, PS4 games aren’t allowed to be significantly higher resolution. I guess 22% more PS4 resolution is within the limits that Microsoft could get away with stipulating.

Funny that PS4 exclusives have no problem reaching 1080p. Even fast paced lush looking driving games like driveclub.

Anyone know how long these platform parity deals were signed up for? Given the absymal Xbox one consumer sales numbers, I wonder how many studios will be happy to sign up this time around…

      • Is that the mystery parity clause that only you believe exists?

      • “Funny that PS4 exclusives have no problem reaching 1080p” – The Border :800p. Yes very funny indeed!

      • Laughed myself silly at The Border comment. It probably does work out as significantly less with the letterbox borders.

      • Platform parity clause exists. Day one 1080p ps4 patches say hi…

      • Please stop embarrassing yourself, the PS4, and PS4 owners with these ridiculous comments.

Oh and for the record, the order isn’t 800p. 1920×800. 800p would suggest being in a 16:9 aspect ratio. 1080p is impossible with the aspect ratio they chose. 1920×800 is more pixels than ‘900p’.

      • Yeah it’s not 800p as the abbreviation does suggest a widescreen scale 16:9 which would equal less than 1920 horizontally (although the p represents progressive over interlace i.e. it’s all vague terminology that gets mistaken easily). Still, the letterbox factor does add an element of humor to the resolution premise. I think Evil Within used it as well.

    • Yes, we should be focussing on performance across a number of areas for each platform. Without measuring, comparing and working on improvements we’ll never improve, or encourage the platform manufacturers/games developers, to improve their products. It’s human nature to compare and improve.

  2. I really enjoyed the latest open Beta, especially the Heist mode. It felt like a much tighter map then usual BF maps, more target oriented and with faster gameplay. It felt really good and I could happily have played that mode by itself.

  3. Wonder whether this is limitations or the developers slacking as it’s hardly the best looking game on the planet.

  4. Here’s hoping UC4 is a showcase of what can be done :)

I don’t know what’s on the horizon for XB1 but I guess a Gears of War would be a game they’d really push and show off the Xbox with.

    • Halo 5 and possibly Forza Motorsport 6 as well. Fable Legends is a DirectX12 posterboy, so that could be one too.

Gears of War will probably go up against that other GoW acronym.

  5. I think this is more a case of lazy, cashgrab developers than the consoles not being powerful enough. They need to update the engine. CoD did and that looked far better than the previous entry.

    • I agree. I’ve seen the beta running on max settings (on my girlfriend’s PC) and it was genuinely shocking to see such average visuals. I’m sure there’s some fancy stuff going on in the background but if that’s what’s being published…umm… wow!

      • Yep, BF4 was excused somewhat with the player counts being doubled on the new gen but to release Hardline with no obvious improvements is looking very lazy and cheap.

  6. The difference between 720p and 900p is easily noticeable. Far more than 900p to 1080p.

At least it’s 60FPS, but this is Hardline we’re talking about here. It’s never looked like a step up from BF4 anyway.

    • Is it? 900p is an extra 56% more pixels than 720p, while 1080p is 44% more than 900p. So the jump from 720 to 900 is roughly the same as the jump from 900 to 1080.

Nothing compared to the 720 to 1080 difference. 125% more pixels there. But any of those differences is going to be noticeable. You can, of course, try and find examples of the lower resolution looking almost as good as the higher resolution and use those as your evidence for why the PS4 isn’t that much better, as certain websites like to do. Not naming any names, of course. (Helps to fiddle with the brightness of the images too. That’s been a trick since the days of PS3/360 comparisons)

      • There’s more to it than mere numbers though MrYd, it’s a case of diminishing returns.

Just fire up a PC game and try it out yourself on a 1080p monitor. I’m sure you’ll agree. :-)

  7. I suspect being developed for PS3 and Xbox 360 have limited the game somewhat.
