Rare Unveil Sea Of Thieves, A Shared World Adventure Game On The High Seas

It’s been a while since there’s been a truly exciting game to come out of the once hallowed halls of Rare, but Sea of Thieves looks like it might well be a return to form for the developer.

Branded a “shared world adventure game”, rather than an MMO, it looks like it will see you take to the high seas as part of a crew of pirates, replete with visiting sun-baked islands, ship-to-ship combat and some of the best waves I’ve ever seen in a video game. Seriously, those waves look quite incredible.

Sadly, there was no mention of a release date for Sea of Thieves, but given that this was just a first reveal, I’d be surprised if this wasn’t something for the end of 2016 at the earliest.

  1. This looks pretty interesting apart from the ‘shared world’ part. Seems like it relies heavily on team work (sailing at least) and that’s great if you have a group of mates with the game, not so much if you’re relying on randoms online. You’re relying on others to progress and very often random players dont want to play ball (see Evolve).

The waves do look great. Reminds me of when I first played AC4 on the PS4 and I just stared at the waves for ages. Couldn’t believe how real they looked.
