What We Played #210: Yoshi’s Wooly World, Batman & Lego Jurassic World

You might not believe this but in the midst of all this excruciatingly hot weather, we’ve still managed to play games here at TSA. Not only that, but we still intend to tell you all about them in a little piece we like to call What We Played. Such an original title, isn’t it?

Speaking of the heat, Tuffcub says he spent his week playing Destiny, and being sweaty on the London Underground. In fact, the song he had on while telling me about this included the lyrics, “sweat, sweat, sweat dripping off.” Oh, and he also played a bit of Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition, but not as much as he would’ve liked.

Dom spent a touch of his week playing Skulls of the Shogun and The Elder Scrolls Online, the latter of which seems to have hugely benefited from its most recent patch. But he spent most of his week playing Batman: Arkham Knight, which he says he’s loved, although now that he’s in the latter portion of the game he stated that he’s starting to see what all the Batmobile complaints were about. Finally, Dom played some Lego Jurassic World with his son, but I’ll let him tell you about that.

It’s safe to say that it’s the most enjoyable LEGO game I’ve/we’ve played. The amount of content in these games is a bit daunting, and after twenty hours we’re only 32% complete! I genuinely think we’ll get everything in it eventually, though it’s making me constantly hum the Jurassic World theme which is the only thing wearing thin!

Jim began his week dipping in and out of Driveclub, which he says he still thoroughly enjoys. From there, he played (and reviewed) J-Stars Victory VS+, which he enjoyed, but he said it’s “clearly meant for the manga/anime die-hards.” Finally he sat back down with Watch Dogs. Jim has been after the final trophy in that game for some time, which required him to collect all the songs. Unfortunately, he discovered that he needed to reset his game data to get it, but that didn’t stop him. He started over, beat the whole thing and got that pesky platinum trophy. What a gamer!

Miguel has been playing a handful of niche fighting games this week, and says that he can’t recommend Fate/Unlimited Codes enough. It does require an import but he says it’s completely worth it. After that, he sunk his time into Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, which he says is his favorite horror game. He wrapped up his week getting in all sorts of trouble in GTA Online. Heists, robberies and selling gang cars – he just couldn’t help himself.

Mark keeps digging through what he says is his game of the year so far, Batman: Arkham Knight. He’s mostly stuck with the main story but said he’s looking forward to tackling all the side stuff as well. He also spent some time with Yoshi’s Wooly World. He’s particularly enjoyed it because it reminds him of Yoshi’s Island, which he says is still one of the best platformers he’s ever played.

Stefan is up next and like many other people, he’s been bothered by the heat. Here’s his tale:

I’ve been playing a number of things this week, but my problem has been that my house has simply been too damned hot! Even if I felt like turning on a console, I’m not sure I could bear to put it through that kind of heat stress! But, there have been games of Vainglory on tablet, I’ve engrossed myself in The Swindle and even delved into Nintendo’s catalogue of upcoming games, with things like Mario Maker and Starfox. You can read all about them either right now or some time next week.

Blair took control of Batman again this week and he’s managed to complete everything in Arkham Knight except for the Riddler trophies. He says that watching the final ending on YouTube sounds more appealing that trying to collect all those trophies, so that might be what he ends up doing. He also started Bayonetta 2, which he says is a marked improvement over its predecessor, “with some huge battles that blow the first game out of the water.”

As for me, I continue to play Rust with a good friend of mine, though these forced server wipes that reset all our progress each month have made us re-think all the time we’re logging. I’m also still in the middle of The Witcher 3, though I swear I’m nearing the end of it. And since I’ve done every side quest and contract along the way, I’m actually nearing the end of the game outside of visiting all the unexplored areas of the map.

That’s about it for us. We loved reading your stories about your first game memory last week, so let us know what you’ve been playing during this sweltering heat. Speaking of heat, for our weekly question, let us know your favorite game or gaming memory that involved using some kind of fire.

  1. I platinumed Ether One (#83) and Super Exploding Zoo (#84), utilising both PS4 and Vita for the latter (I know, Vita right)! Both were enjoyable, and a nice break from Black Ops 2, although I did find Ether One a bit boring at times (lots of reading, and puzzles were either obvious, or rather hard).

On PS3 I managed a bit of Black Ops 2, continuing with my Veteran and collecting Intel playthrough.

I also played a bit of Dying Light (Bozak Horde DLC to assist my brother) and Project CARS (Community Events).

I can’t think of any stand-out gaming moments involving fire – I recall burning the Japanese with a flame-thrower in CoD World at War. The flame-thrower in Dead Nation was pretty good, it would slow the zombies down to give you some breathing space, and would also spread through the crowds of the undead rather nicely.

  2. Things from sales still this week. And I rather stupidly picked up Disgaea D2, so that’s another billion hours gone. (Until Disgaea 5 appears on the PS4, at least)

As for fire. Hmm, explosions count as fire. They’re just very quick fires. So therefore I must mention The Red Dead Redemption Exploding Horse Incident. Still amuses me just thinking about it. The redistribution of horse parts over a wide area is a bit upsetting. The redistribution of people parts, less so. Because they were being an arse. Or a friend. It might have involved friends. Whatever, they deserved it. But the Amazing Gravity-Defying Carriage was the best bit. It’s probably still there to this day. (I know. That’s not how things work. But in my mind they do).

It’s better than any of those moments in numerous games that involve a building on fire and you’ve got to escape. (Didn’t AC3 have one of the worst examples of that too?)

  3. Little Big Planet this week. Managed to finally complete the first one after putting it off for so long. Going through Little Big Planet 2.

Not much else as I have watched the latest series of The Walking Dead which was great.

    • Use of Fire in a game.

Far Cry 2 at the time was revolutionary for its use of fire. Final Fantasy 7 and its cutscene of Sephiroth standing in the Nebelheim fire. Uncharted 3 escaping from the Chateau when it was up in flames.

  4. Got the platinum for Wolfenstein:TNO (unlucky #13), after I finally realized that some of the perks were hierarchical so I had to unlock other perks first rather than trying to get them randomly!

Upgraded the hard drive in my PS4 to 1TB and then installed and started The Witcher 3 but barely scratched the surface. Otherwise a bit of DriveClub as per usual.

There’s been so many fire related activities in games it’s hard to pick out any really memorable ones. Trevor setting fire to the farm in GTAV was pretty fun though, and I do so enjoy blowing up tankers, tank farms and petrol stations and watching them burn in any game :)

  5. Reached driver level 50 in Driveclub – I don’t know why but that plastic bag is beginning to really irritate me. In fact, I find the game to be quite frustrating at times.

Plodding along my 2nd playthrough of Witcher 3 (I messed up the Gwent trophy first time) but on the lowest difficulty this time. It’s ridiculously easy. If you intend to play it I would advise jumping straight into Death March difficulty.

    • The same thing happened to me,I forgot to play the Baron before the end of his story. It was to late before I realised what i had to do.So i’m gonna start a new game on death March difficulty.

  6. Recovering from a heavy Glastonbury, finally got to play a bit of Batman. Just unlocked second island, so barely anywhere through yet.

    • Oh, I’m now level 21 trophy thing after a few story ones in Batman.

  7. Having been late to the next gen, I’ve been enjoying killzone shadow fall. Nearly finished the single-player, had to rage-quit last night due to repeated deaths on level 10 (I think, might be level 9 can’t remember :p)
Managed to buy a few games off eBay, fifa14, battlefield 4, cod advanced warfare, & watch dogs.to go along with Witcher, project cars & the order that came with the console.
One thing I’ve learnt is that no matter how big your ps3 backlog is,when you get a new console you can’t resist buying more games.#never-ending backlog/more money than sense

  8. Picked up Ziggurat and Rack’n’Ruin from last weekends US PSN store flash sale for the combined total of $10.50 (about 7 quid).
Ziggurat is quite fun, kind of like a magic based version of Tower of Guns. I’ve not started RnR yet.

More Borderlands 2 co-op with Forrest and Pixel.

A little more Diablo, just enough to reach paragon level 500. Anxiously awaiting the 2.3 patch as the new stuff they’re adding sounds awesome.

A little bit of Riptide GP2, just about halfway through the career.

And, after months of grinding, I finally got the platinum for Pure Pool. Big shout out to Pixel for helping me get the final accolade required to finish it off.

    • I hear you shoutin,an no worries sir ;)

  9. Oh yes, regarding fire in games, the one that comes to my mind is setting enemy’s on fire then finishing them off with a swarm of bees in bioshock. Lovely ;)

    • Oh, I forgot about incinerate! That’s a good one.

  10. My day off wasn’t very nice weather-wise so i stayed inside, did some laundry and completed TR:DE.
Also played some Stealth Inc 2 and Driveclub.
