The Pokémon Company has confirmed that Pokkén Tournament, the fighting game that stars some Pokémon, will be releasing on Wii U in Spring 2016. The annoucement was made during the Pokémon Tournament Championship. Pokkén Tournament was originally created for arcades by Bandai Namco last year, and released in Japan. At the time there was some speculation that a Wii U release would happen.
Considering the continued draw Pokémon gets Pokkén Tournament could help strongly lift sales of the Wii U, even as the console approaches its twilight years before the NX releases. Whether Pokken Tournament becomes a franchise alongside the regular Pokémon games will depend on how well it sells on Nintendo’s console.
