What We Played #231 – Fallout 4, Star Wars Battlefront & The Crew: Wild Run

Well that’s another week in the book. If you’re of the American persuasion you’re likely recovering from a turkey-fuelled binge yesterday and potentially running to the mall to grab some amazing Black Friday deals. Of course, the rest of the world is now getting in on the act, but will mostly be waiting until the end of December for our yearly turkey dinner, and likely find a slightly longer checkout time on Amazon to be the closest we get to Black Friday chaos. Happy Thanksgiving!

Of course, the beginning of any holiday season still leaves plenty of time for games, and our very own Tef kicks us off this week by talking of a super secret review event, that he super can’t talk about, because it’s super secret. Eye-opening stuff.

He also briefly found the Force in Star Wars Battlefront, before having to make time for three reviews in the shape of Hard West, Bloodborne: The Old Hunters and the latest portion of Minecraft: Story Mode. Perhaps next week we’ll get in on the secret eh?

Dave has been splitting his time between three epic – but decidedly different – RPGs, starting with Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Bros. for a forthcoming review, Zodiac – Orcanon Odyssey on iOS, and Fallout 4. He decided to take Fallout 4 for a fresh spin, and in doing so created a new feature, with the result being the joyful video you’ll find here for Fallout Gump. Run Dogmeat run.

Aran returned to The Crew for the brand new expansion Wild Run, and a year on it makes some serious improvements to Ubisoft’s disappointing racer. After racing around he calmed down with the slightly less hi-octane Football Manager 2016, though playing as Southampton he not only knocked Liverpool out of the FA Cup in the 5th round, but also signed Subotic from Dortmund for £6 million in the January transfer window, which perhaps is just as much of a thrill.

Thanks to Thanksgiving, Mark hasn’t had much time for gaming thanks to Black Friday preparations at work, though he has managed some impressive multi-tasking by eating breakfast and playing Rise Of The Tomb Raider at the same time. The only problem with this is the loose aiming, which he blames on the Xbox One’s controller, as opposed to trying to eating Frosties whilst raiding tombs. Either way, perhaps it’ll be better with a Dualshock.

Miguel, part of our team from across the pond, spent a couple of days working his way through Undertale, after which he spent the rest of the week crying about Undertale. At no point does he say whether this was because it was emotionally involving, absolutely dreadful, or he stubbed his toe while changing the disc so you’ll have to buy it and find out for yourselves.

Checking in to let us know that Fallout 4 is already beginning to bore him, TC found some sci-fi solace with Star Wars Battlefront after watching his hubby play. Friends and alcohol played a part in him getting on down in Just Dance 2016, while in a few quieter moments he finished off the Unfinished Swan on his Vita. But now it’s the Finished Swan. Or not. Or it’s a rift in the space-time continuum.

I’ve been on the road for a couple of nights this week which saw me jump back into Uncharted: Golden Abyss which remains a fantastic handheld experience. Playing it again just emphasised how much potential the Vita has/had, and it’s a massive shame that we won’t see games like that appear on it again. I then cheered myself up by playing a touch of Patapon, which never fails to make me smile.

At home I’ve been working my way through the epic Xenoblade Chronicles X on Wii U for a forthcoming review, as well as sticking with  Star Wars Battlefront which I’m still enjoying a great deal, despite its slim range of modes. I can’t wait for the Battle Of Jakku DLC to drop though, especially after reading the Star Wars novel Lost Stars that touches on it and watching the The Force Awakens trailers multiple times a day.

But now it’s your turn! What the hell have you been doing?!

  1. Black Ops 3 – used last weekends’ double XP to reach level 40 in multiplayer. Maps are boring and people keep choosing to replay the same map/mode you’ve just played! Won’t return until the next double XP, just need the level 55 multiplayer trophy. Also did a fair bit of zombies “Shadow of Evil”, managed to do the Easter Egg a couple of times and get 7 of the 9 trophies in a couple of sittings. Hoping to get the final 2 this evening – it’s a great map, and the visuals are absolutely brilliant!

Rocket League – the Monday evening TSA racing crew have kindly let me into their group for this, and it’s always enjoyable!

Back to the Future – got the platinum last night, number 94 – in touching distance of 100!

Minecraft Story Mode – played the first episode, it’s ok, not TellTale’s strongest game by a long way, although my son did enjoy it!

Need for Speed – got the silly Ken Block DLC trophy done last night, and reached level 49. Should get the platinum this evening and the last, easier DLC trophy for 100%.

FIFA 16 – played a few FUT offline tournaments with a mate, racking up a few coins. Spent 60,000 on the in-form Martial, and now saving up 40,000 for the in-form Harry Kane to partner him upfront.

    • Just got my Need for Speed platinum (my 95th), and also my 6,000th trophy! Also got the last few Black Ops 3 zombies trophies so I’m ready for any DLC!

      • Nice one on the trophy bud, both platinum and total amount.

      • Thanks mate! Sadly I have a handful of long games to finish so my 100th platinum will be a while off yet!

  2. I’m the same with the Force Awakens trailer. Not long now. I delved into Battlefront for a couple of hours and thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it.

I’ve played a lot of Gears of War multiplayer recently too and I’m finally get skilled at it. Lots of killstreaks and points earnt in King of the Hill, and I’ve opted to keep the game for now.

Returned to DiRT rally yesterday after finding some workarounds to bugs, it’s still fantastic. Codemasters just need to become actual masters of code and get rid of those crazy bugs that seem to come out nowhere in the updates they make. Going to try out the rainbow six siege beta a little bit later, and delve into some more racing games with my new driving force shifter.

    • Me too, they make my spine all tingly! I’ve also been smashing up Battlefront, not being an fps fan I’m very grateful that it’s a shallow but good quality experience, I personally think it harkens back to the PS2 fps experience which is nice. I’ve been working on getting my KDR up above 1, I had a storming death match session earlier that’s gotten me up to 0.88, mostly luck I think!

  3. The usual Borderlands 2 co-op, although only with Forrest this week.
More Dying Light co-op with Forrest, Pixel and berzerka.
Played a bit of Borderlands Pre Sequel to tidy up a few misc trophies and to start work on a few of the character specific stuff.
Played a round of the new Quail Hollow course in PGA Tour.
Played the odd run of Binding of Isaac here and there.
Picked up a few bargains from the US stores black Friday and co-op sales. Got Rayman Legends, Onechanbara Z2 Chaos, Wolfenstein: The Old Blood and the Dying Light season pass all for $60 (£40).

    • Blimey, yYou guys still not finished Borderlands 2 or Dying Light yet? ;)

      • Yeah, we have. We’re currently doing a UVHM run through BL2 (for levelling purposes) and just collectibles left for me in Dying Light though the others have a few other misc things to do. DL does take a while when you’re only playing for about 2 hours a week.

      • I can imagine, and it only takes one of you to get distracted on a side-quest! ;)

Am looking forward to The Following expansion!

      • “it only takes one of you to get distracted on a side-quest”

Thought my ears were burning. Yeah, that would be me! ;)

  4. Still FO4 for me. Have just reached level 50 so another trophy closer to the platinum.

  5. Took full advantage of BLOPS3’s double XP weekend and managed to prestige in the process. To echo Youles’ comment above, people tend to vote for the same maps over, and over, and over, and over, and over… and over again so things can get pretty boring unless you switch lobbies every so often.

While I haven’t bought it yet, the new Bloodborne DLC encouraged me to start a new playthrough of the vanilla game last night. If that game doesn’t win GOTY I’ll be pretty disappointed. MGS5 was cool but the story was mince, Witcher 3 was terrific but a bit unpolished in places (combat wasn’t great either), Fallout 4 was great but VERY unpolished, whereas Bloodborne is just a terrific package all round.

Currently browsing the Black Friday PSN deals, telling myself I don’t need anymore games but edging ever closer to that “buy” button.

  6. Not much time this week but when i did it was mostly Fallout 4, reached level 17 and have just visited Diamond City for the first time.

  7. I’ve got back into exploring more custom games in Dota 2. Some of them are great fun, others not so much.

    P.S Isn’t this #231, not #131? :P

  8. Just Fallout 4 this week. Need to get back into MG:Phantom Pain this weekend.

  9. Finished Rise of the Tomb Raider which is fantastic and gave up with Need for Speed which could’ve been much more fun if they hadn’t done this daft always online idea.

  10. Been on Share Factory trying to edit 40GB of gaming vids and uploading them to YouTube and transfer to my HDD then I can begin Fallout 4! Hopefully tomorrow afternoon.
Been playing Fifa 16 and have 600,000 Coins so going to either buy a Legend or save up for a more expensive legend xD

    • How the hell have you got that many coins?!

      • Basically, Del is a Plat addict and his days of being addicted to trophies resulted in him gaining the super power of getting Fifa coins. And for some reason, the ability to play games with his ears.

      • Lol I had a few lucky packs with the likes of Robben, De Gea, Kompany. Also played 500 matches. I update my progress in Fifa 16 Forum if yoy wish to check ;)
