Nintendo Explain What The Nintendo Classic Mini Can And Cannot Do

Yesterday’s announcement of the Nintendo Classic Mini: Nintendo Entertainment System was a bit of a surprise. It comes with 30 classic games loaded into a little box that looks like a miniaturised NES, HDMI out and a pair of controller ports on the front, but people wondered if it might be able to go beyond those limitations.

Kotaku put a few questions to Nintendo, and cleared up what this $60/£50 device will and won’t be able to do when it comes out in November. Essentially, the thirty games on the device are all that you’re getting.

“The console is a standalone device, so it cannot connect to the internet or any external storage devices,” Nintendo said. “The 30 games included with the system were chosen to provide a wide variety of top-quality, long-lasting game-play experiences.” On top of that, “The console does not use physical media and therefore the Chamber Lid does not open.”

In other words, it is what it is, and if you expected or hoped for more than that, then you’re out of luck. there’s still an awful lot of good games on there, though.

Still, it opens up the intriguing possibility of similar mini consoles for the SNES and N64 – particularly with that long winded naming. When Kotaku asked, Nintendo replied with a standard “We have nothing to announce at this time.”

  1. so basically its tat?
just download an emulator and play a million and one games they chose to omit!

  2. Yeah, I definitely want one. Especially as my only experience with Nintendo consoles is several versions of Gameboy/3DS, I’ve never played all those NES classics like Zelda, Super Mario. People saying get this 3rd party retro console, or that emulator, or this software on a Raspberry Pi are missing the point- It’s an official Nintendo product, so build quality should be excellent and it will look great and you don’t need original cartridges (which are quite expensive if you haven’t got them already) or to mess around with dodgy, probably illegal, ROMS.

    • That’s what appeals to me – it being a genuine Ninty product (plus it’s super cute and kinda cool as a 30th anniversary thing)!

I’ll probably only play the Zeldas, Mario Bros and Mario 3 – but it’ll be so cool! Pre-ordered mine today along with a second controller.

      • Where can you pre-order from??? I’ve haven’t seen any. Might nudge the missus into ordering it for my Christmas present what with it been out in November.

      • Nevermind, seen they’re live now. Amazon already showing as unavailable and GAME limiting to 1 each of the machine and second controller per customer. As (for all their faults) GAME don’t charge until they’re ready to dispatch pre-orders I’ve ordered there to ensure I’ve got my foot in the door at least.

  3. At that price, sold!

It’s a very hazy memory playing the old NES but I remember it being awesome fun. Monsters in my Pocket being the first game that leaps out of my grey matter :-)

  4. a PS1 version of this would be sweet
