Report: Mass Effect Series On Hold, Studio Downsized

It’s been reported that a number of staff at BioWare Montreal have been moved to other EA studios following the release of Mass Effect Andromeda. Kotaku sources say that personnel have been shuffled into EA Motive – currently working on Star Wars Battlefront – and other BioWare divisions. Those remaining at Montreal will continue to support Andromeda with patches and multiplayer support.

With Mass Effect’s long-awaited return garnering such a lukewarm reception, there are concerns the popular sci-fi series could be sidelined. That said, it’s common for developers to undergo restructuring once a game has shipped, especially in multi-studio companies like EA which pool talent towards their biggest current titles.

However, Kotaku are reporting that the Mass Effect series has now been placed on hold whilst Bioware focus on their new IP which recently had it’s release date revised and might not be out until March 2019.

  1. Seems pretty normal practise these days, good to know they are reassigning staff rather than letting them go.
