Here’s Sony’s Latest Trailer Advertising 4K Gaming On PS4, In Glorious 1080p

Look, I know it’s Friday and everyone is a bit tired, but really Sony? A spanking new trailer shouting about PlayStation Pro’s 4K gaming and you only upload the 1080p version, tut tut.

The trailer includes footage from Horizon Zero Dawn, Gran Turismo Sport, MLB The Show 17, and some previously seen footage from the new God of War.

  1. That’s “Dynamic 4K gaming” now. Presumably because Sony have legal people who pointed out that the internet is full of pedantic cockwombles.

    • No, because it’s… dynamic. You wouldn’t want Sony implying its console plays 4K games, would you?

On a separate note, what’s dynamic about a game running at fixed 1800p is beyond me. I guess it’s better than ‘sub-4K gaming’. Maybe a generalisation like Ultra HD would be better. But it’s not used often enough, and Microsoft would only respond with ‘true 4K gaming’ or ‘true UHD gaming’ because well, it would be true.

Sorry, I’m reveling in the moment too much.

      • Doesn’t it get output at 4K though? Whatever resolution the game is running at internally gets upscaled either by the game or the PS4 to 4K.

It’s the Killzone: Shadow Fall thing all over again. Some muppet decided to sue Sony because it wasn’t native 1080p but upscaled. How did that turn out in the end? Wasn’t it whatever the legal term for “it still counts”? (Assuming there is such a term)

I’m sure MS will come up with some suitable term when Scorpio gets released. Something like “Look! Real 4K! Look at that, not the price tag! Please!!”

      • Yeah the same way Xbox One games are full HD because they are output in 1080p :/

As you say, the usual pedantic suspects would debate otherwise on resolution.

I’m sure MS will just forgo the resolution terms and use ‘most powerful console’. A bit like Sony used to, although maybe they plan to stick with term and use dates 2014-2016 or some such detail, at least that’s what they’ve done with the ‘best selling console’ tagline.

  2. It always makes me laugh when you see an advert on TV for a TV, trying to show how good the screen is on that TV. Ridiculous advertising.

    • Well, advertising IS mostly about getting your imagination going and making you see yourself owning that TV. So… ;)

    • Yep, almost always a load of crap! Except that Sony ad with the bouncy balls in San Francisco, that worked beautifully on me and a couple of mates!

  3. There’s going to be a lot of asterisks with the box text for these faux 4k games.
