The photo mode in Super Mario Odyssey is amazing, not because it’s a technical marvel and certainly not for how well it lets you play with aperture, focal distance or anything like that… because it doesn’t let you do that. Instead, it’s a marvel because, while he’s seen as the most boring and vanilla video game character by many, Mario is one of the most expressive characters going.
Where Aloy from Horizon Zero Dawn has about as much emotion in her face as an angry looking car during regular gameplay, Mario is full of joy every time he pulls his iconic jump, he mops his brow when he’s too hot, yawns if left idle, looks just plain beat up when on his last bit of health.
Here’s some of the favourite photos we took while playing Super Mario Odyssey for review. We’ve kept them pretty damn spoiler free, but there might be one or two captured creatures or objects that you’ve not seen before, so be warned. Other than that, enjoy!

Pirate Goomba’s are my faves, but I have a soft spot for Super Wholesome Meme Mario, as I call the first one, and the second where he gazes up at the floating island.
