Nintendo Added And Then Removed User Reviews On The eShop

Everyone loves user reviews for video games. Steam is full of reviews prior to release, games regularly get bombed with hundreds of thousands of downvotes whenever the developer does something people don’t quite like, and then there’s the questionable merits of a five star or ten point scoring system when people gravitate to the very extremes.

None of that stopped Nintendo from deciding they wanted a slice of that pie, and then deciding very quickly that they really want to think about this a little bit more.

At the end of last week they added user reviews, giving people the ability to post their opinions and a five star rating, as well as picking a handful of tags so that prospective buyers could try and find games similar to their own tastes more easily. This is actually a good idea, as Nintendo have the opportunity to get ahead of the curve and get a system in place to help people with discoverability in an eShop store for Switch that is already starting to feel easy to get lost in.

Alas, it was not long for this world, with Nintendo pulling it just five days later. There’s now a note that says that “Customer reviews have been taken offline as we evaluate this feature and its functionality. We currently have no estimated date on when an update will be provided. We appreciate the positive response and thank the reviewers who provided such thoughtful commentary on the games.”

  1. User reviews are always either 5 star or 1 star, lol! And when someone buns £7k on a TV, they’re hardly gonna go on Amazon and say it’s shite!
