After months of build up, and a rather large leak last week, Sony have confirmed that PlayStation Network ID changes are on the way, letting you hand in your embarrassing online name badge in favour of something a bit more sensible.
The function will go into testing with the PlayStation Preview Program – select users that have previously registered for system software betas will be offered this first – before rolling out across the network in early 2019.
While you can change your name as many times as you like, only the first change will be free, with subsequent changes costing $4.99/€4.99/£3.99 for PS+ subscribers and $9.99€9.99/£7.99 for those without. You then have the option to also display your old ID or hide it away in shame.
However, it doesn’t come without a few caveats. Some games released before 1st April 2018 may not play nicely with new names, and in particular this might affect PS3 and PS Vita titles. If you wish to revert, you can do so for free, though you can only do this once during the preview program.
Sony will publish a list of compatible games soon, but hopefully they’ll also include details on games that are problematic. If not, I guess it’s a case of watching and waiting for others to make the jump and find out what breaks because of this.

I might have changed it a few years ago, as it was something I made up quickly when setting up the network adapter for PS2, but I’ve come accustomed to it now and don’t want to change.
