What We Played #445 – Final Fantasy VII Remake, Resident Evil 3 & Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Is it Friday? We think it’s Friday. It probably is, since I’m pretty sure that yesterday was Thursday, and today feels particularly “good”, if you know what I mean.

Whatever day of the week it is, it looks particularly nice out. Perfect weather to gaze at through a window during loading screens of whatever game you’ve decided to pass the time with this week.

For me, there’s been a continuing diet of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, where I’ve made a killing on the Stalk Market this week thanks to friendly internet people. However, I’ve been trying to reduce my time on AC a bit, and so have diversified for the first time in weeks to review Spyder on iOS and Good Job! on Switch. Both were decent, but with a handful of flaws.

First to pipe up this week was Tuffcub, who’s been playing something other than Destiny 2 and can now tell us all what it was. If you’ve been paying attention to our features this week, you’ll have spotted a glowing review of Final Fantasy VII Remake from TC, in what is a defining example of a remake done right.

Aran’s looking forward to a weekend of Yakuza 3 Remastered, but before he got to that he’s finished off the enjoyable Greedfall and played a fair bit of Call of Duty: Warzone with his brother, cousin and friends. “The LMG is my go to as I’m getting a nice number of kills per match with that. Managed to sneak into one room and open fire, taking out 6 players.”

Similarly in anticipation of a new game, Nic was crushing Persona 5 Royal to snatch its platinum trophy and be able to jump on Final Fantasy VII just as the clock struck midnight. He’s also trying to finish his Theros Mastery in MTG Arena before that ends next week. Will he make it? The bank holiday will certainly help.

Gamoc has had a far less enjoyable week, as he reviewed The (not so) Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing III, while we’re waiting for his verdict on Throw Anything. His go to during the lockdown is Minecraft though, where he’s branch mining for diamonds, but that’s been supplemented by Beat Saber and COD Warzone.

Steve finished off Vampire The Masquerade: Coteries of New York, “which is a silly title but an enjoyable visual novel take on the tabletop RPG,” but largely savoured being able to run through Resident Evil 3 for the first time. It’s “a very different experience to 2 and perhaps a little short but designed for repeat plays to get the completion time down so will be diving back in soon.”

Nick is well ahead of him though, as he raced through an S Rank on Inferno difficulty in just 80 minutes to snatch the platinum. Aside from that it’s been Animal Crossing and Warzone, as per usual.

Trying to get his personal YouTube channel off the ground, Reuben has been playing Bravely Default II Demo Ver., while chipping away at Final Fantasy XIV and Animal Crossing’s Bunny Day event.

And finally, Dom has been supplementing his empowered escapism in Animal Crossing with a return to his teenage years and Panzer Dragoon Remake.

Now then, what have you been playing this past week?

  1. RE3 became my 420th Plat on Sunday and I was quite disappointed with the game as it did not lived uo to my expectactions.
Having fun on Resistance as it is different and fresh and I like it. Just 2 trophies away from the Plat and have been trying to get them the past two days…. here is hoping I get the plat this weekend.
Downloaded DiRT 2.0 from PS Plus and enjoying it as I have missed racing game for a while and will be playing that daily for communnity events trophy was so close to winning my first daily challenge. Currently working my way to get a million credits so that I can get a decent car for the weekly and monthly community ^^
    Stay safe folks!

  2. On my second week of ‘lockdown’ , trying to keep busy by going for walks and tidying/cleaning rearranging the house and garden. Dusted off my PS3 and realised i have almost 300 PS3 games to dip into – Killzone games, MGS collection, DMC collection, GOW collection, Valve’s Orange Box just to name a few. I’m currently replaying KZ2 – in 1080p with all the max display settings instead of the 720p tv i was limited to back then – and i’m really impressed at how it looks after all this time. The opening sequence is still quite potent – ie Visari’s speech “..we will unleash such terrible vengeance, that generations yet unborn will cry out in anguish!”

  3. Lots of Borderlands 3, after getting halfway through and then getting distracted. Now I’ve got all sorts of ridiculous guns and it’s even more fun. The phrase “couldn’t hit a cows arse with a banjo” comes up far too often though.

Then a bit of Dirt Rally 2.0, which is fun but still needs a VR mode.

And thanks to PS+, there’s Just Cause 4. A huge improvement over the previous one, which was basically just broken and never fixed. Not seen any major framerate drops yet. And while you can’t hit a cows arse with a banjo in it, you can at least attach balloons and watch them float away. Or attach balloons to anything you want, really. Which is fun.

And a bit of NMS with that exosuit update. And a bit of VR fun with Honor & Duty again . Another update there made it look nicer, but made the physics far too enthusiastic. My reputation for being shit at driving isn’t being helped by jeeps that roll over if you go around a corner too fast. It’s probably worse for the passengers though.

  4. Just Division 2, which keeps delivering, there’s so much to explore..! Loved the Space Museum mission and Kenly College was also good fun.

  5. I polished off Life is Strange: Before the Storm this week. Another excellent storytelling triumph, I really really enjoyed it! I had a quick go at GRID on Stadia last night, things have certainly moved on since OnLive was a thing I got a silky smooth picture with very little lag, not sure I’ll get my monies worth though so I may not pay when the free two months run out.

I’m in the mood for some Fast & Furious style drama with some arcady racing tonight so while my wife rages over another jigsaw I think I’ll start Need For Speed Rivals.
