Sony are holding a State of Play stream this Thursday all about Ghost of Tsushima

While their rival is keen to focus on the next generation, Sony still have unfinished business with the PlayStation 4 and the release of The Last of Us Part II and Ghost of Tsushima this summer. While we’ve seen a fair amount of the former, the latter is still something of a mystery, and so Sony’s first State of Play stream of the year will focus on Sucker Punch’s samurai opus.

The stream will be held this Thursday, 14th May, going live at 9PM BST / 10PM BST, across both Twitch and YouTube. It will give us a good long look at the game before its release for PlayStation 4 on 17th July.

Ghost of Tsushima will be the only game on show, and to be crystal clear, Sony even went as far as to say:

And just to be clear — there won’t be any PS5 news or updates in this episode, just a big, beautiful look at Sucker Punch’s PS4 open-world epic.

But while there won’t be next-gen, there will be lots of gameplay! The stream will be around 18 minutes in length, giving us a look at new footage of the game that includes exploration, combat and more.

The last we saw of the game came at The Game Awards, having seen next to nothing for over a year and a half before then.

The trailer introduces the last samurai Jin Sakai left standing during the first Mongol invasion of Japan, evoking some of the same style and imagery from this year’s hit game Sekiro, but with a less fantastical slant. It’s more in keeping with Japanese Chanbara cinema, such as Seven Samurai and Sanjuro, and aiming to be true to the feudal Japanese setting. However, Jin will have to learn and adopt new battle techniques that go beyond those of a traditional samurai.

The game is the first from Sucker Punch Productions since the release of inFamous First Light in 2014, first being revealed in October 2017 at Paris Games Week. This was followed by gameplay at E3 2018, as Sony went for an atypical format to their presentation, before a long, long wait till the last latest showing at The Game Awards 2019.

Having only seen bits of the game here and there, it has long been speculated that Sony might be holding Ghost of Tsushima back, waiting to unleash it as an early PS5 launch title. However, Sony stamped that rumour out and it is definitely coming to PlayStation 4 in July. Maybe Sony will wait until after their two big summer blockbusters are out the door before shifting gears to focus on building up the buzz and anticipation for the PlayStation 5. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
