The Last of Us Part II sold 4 million copies in three days to become fastest-selling PS4 exclusive

Sony have announced that The Last of Us Part II has become the fast-selling PlayStation 4 exclusive yet, with over 4 million copies of the highly anticipated game sold by 21st June, through its first three days on sale.

It’s easily surpassed the 2.6 million benchmark set by Horizon Zero Dawn (set over the course of two weeks), the 3.1 million copies of God of War sold in its first three days, and the most recent record holder, Marvel’s Spider-Man, which managed to shift 3.3 million copies in its first weekend.

Celebrating the achievement, Neil Druckmann posted the following message on the PlayStation Blog:

We are so immensely grateful to the millions of fans around the world that have played The Last of Us Part II and shared their experiences with us over the last week. We set out to tell a new kind of story, one that deals with difficult themes and would challenge you in unexpected ways. Hearing how the experience has resonated with so many of you and witnessing the type of thoughtful discussions it has sparked has been so incredible. We’ve also been so inspired by your creativity — whether it’s your gorgeous Photo Mode shots, jaw-dropping gameplay GIFs, or the songs you’ve recorded using Ellie’s guitar.

The Last of Us Part II was made possible thanks to the efforts of the hundreds of talented and passionate developers here at Naughty Dog. We can imagine no greater honor than seeing that same passion mirrored by the people playing it. Thank you for helping us reach this amazing milestone.

It’s a high water mark that’s been set right at the end of the generation, meaning that there are few meaningful opportunities for The Last of Us Part II to be surpassed. Two more first party exclusives are coming to the PlayStation 4 in the next month,  before all of Sony’s first party attentions turn to the PlayStation 5. As a PSVR title, it’s doubtful that Iron Man VR can really contend (though it could set a VR exclusive record), meaning there’s just Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Tsushima that’s coming out on 17th July. You reckon it’s got a chance?

Critics have praised the game with many giving it a top score, including us! “The Last of Us Part II is a remorseless epic delivering in its masterful storytelling, nail-biting gameplay and unrivalled production values,” we said in our 10/10 review. “Naughty Dog have truly surpassed themselves yet again, crafting a heartfelt sequel that will leave you gasping as they continue to raise the bar for the video game industry. It’s yet another must-buy for PlayStation 4 owners, supercharging Sony’s unstoppable stable of exclusives.”

That sales record is richly deserved, then.

  1. Pleased for Naughty Dog after the leaks and online hate train they have had to go through

  2. Very good to hear, especially as there are some stupid idiots around, causing leaks, downvoting the game on Metacritic, or even ridiculously starting petitions for a rewrite of the story, etc.

    • I heard a rumour that The Last of Us 3 is going to be bundled with a license for Word so you can write your own fan fic.
