Our Most Wanted Games of 2021 – #7 Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

One of PlayStation’s most beloved mascot duos, Ratchet & Clank have long outlived their rivals, Jak & Daxter. Although they only made one appearance during the previous console cycle, it was an absolute romp to say the least, even if it did little to help the 2016 feature film.

What we know about Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is that it will pick up after the events of the penultimate games in the long-running series, Into the Nexus, which launched on the PlayStation 3 back in 2013 (and was one of the console’s most underrated late game hits). However, you won’t need to be overly familiar with previous storylines and characters to get the most out of the pair’s newest adventure, as it will set out to explore new territory. Sony and Insomniac no doubt see this as an opportunity to expand their Ratchet fanbase on PS5.

Unlike some games on our top 50 list, we’ve actually seen Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart in action. It’s become somewhat of a cliche by now, but this game really does look like a Pixar film in motion thanks to the wonderful art direction and new graphical effects like ray tracing. Insomniac will once again deliver their trademark tangy cocktail of crazy guns, rewarding sci-fi exploration, and witty humour, hopefully infused with some clever new spins.

Since its debut, fans have been wanting to see more from the sequel’s mysterious female Lombax character. She’s no doubt of huge significance to the story which will hopefully cram in new villains to thwart and familiar faces to buddy up with. Insomniac may have wowed us with Spider-Man and Miles Morales though PlayStation die-hards will know that this latest Ratchet & Clank game just might be the studio’s best to date.
