What We Played #567 – Splatoon 3, Xenoblade Chronicles & Steelrising

Steelrising Header

It’s been a rather tempestuous week of lightning, thunder and rain, and that’s leant itself perfectly to looking doubtfully out the window and then deciding to play some games instead. For myself, I’ve had to focus on playing Splatoon 3 and writing up our review of this great (if not mindblowing) sequel. I’m looking forward to playing with the general public as the game’s out today.

Aside from that, I’ve also had to knuckle down and deliver on some more previews from Gamescom, with the likes of Serial Cleaners, American Arcadia, and plenty more still to come. There’s so many games!

While Nic B has been venturing out and about to play Pokémon Go – I hope he wore a rain jacket! – and Aran’s been off on holiday in Ireland doing some very adult-y type things, Gamoc’s been keeping himself indoors to review Steelrising for us.

“It’s a Soulslike with French robots set during the French Revolution,” he tells us. “If that doesn’t convince you to read the review at least, I don’t know what else to say!”

Steve’s had a typical menagerie of gaming through the past week. Xenoblade Chronicles “is likely to be my obituary” he reckons, but he took time out to play a bit of Thymesia and defeat the first real boss in the game. Last but not least, he hopped back into Bug Fables – “a great Paper Mario clone” – which he’s racing through before it leaves Game Pass.

As well as his usual Dead by Daylight and Fortnite, Nick P’s been playing No Place For Bravery for an upcoming review, and started on Cult of the Lamb, “which is excellent!”

And finally, Dom’s sole gaming experience this past week was a bit of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with his son.

Now then, what have you all been playing?

  1. I continued Red Dead Redemption 2, but the story drags on quite a bit, the quests are mostly meaningless steal and kill tasks, and there is zero emotional attachment I have to any of these characters. The game world is no doubt beautiful, and it’s surely a matter of taste, but there’s not enough there for me to spend my time with this game much longer.

We also tried this Ace Seafood game, which is free in Extra, and it made the top of my list of most quickly deleted games ever, just trash..!

I also tried F.E.A.R., which I liked back then. But, unfortunately, it hasn’t aged well, so that was that.

Oh, but worst of all was… that stupid PS5 update..! There is zero excuse for taking two years for this, and also none for implementing folders as badly as that. Positioning gamelists off screen, awkwardly hidden in the library instead of on the dashboard where you want them, and with over 400 games and zero filters to pick anything efficiently, it’s just useless.

  2. A week of new things. PS+ games? Toem is kind of fun, and an idea PS+ game. And that fighting game is a bit meh.

And then some actual games I paid money for! 3 little indie games…

Arcade Paradise? Lots of fun, although young people might not appreciate the games. Or the laundry business side of it. Or notice the sneaky inclusion of (almost) Sonic Youth’s Dirty album (which is 30 years old!)

Cult of the Lamb? Far too cute. Starts of a bit slow, but then you’ve suddenly got far too much to do managing a cult and running through dungeons.

And then Inscryption. Which I believe you’re not supposed to say much about other than it’s a deceptively simple card battling thing. With a lot of depth to it that you really need to play lots to understand.

Oh, and some more of Grid Legends, which is a decidedly average racer, but fun enough.

  3. More than a few hours in Far Cry 5. Am about 3/4 of the way to filling the first areas resistance meter and taking on the first family member…

  4. The quest for platinum in AC Brotherhood continues, it’s a pain having to unlock the map first for the collectables but needs must and progress is being made.
I got Lego Harry Potter on Vita to almost platinum, I just need one more trophy but that is also on the back burner until the plat for Brotherhood pops.
Next week I’ll be aiming for Lego Avengers or Lego Legends of Chima (both on Vita), depending on how I feel, I haven’t quite decided yet. I’ve kind of decided to get the platinums on the Lego series of games – apart from Lego Rock Band, as I have neither the space or the money for all the equipment that would be needed, or the PS5 versions, as I don’t have a PS5. Lord knows I have enough of a backlog with PS3, 4 and Vita! So far I have almost half of the 50 something available titles completed, so it feels like a manageable challenge ?.
This weekend I have a plan to try and go through the co op maps on Far Cry 3 (PS3) so we’ll see how that goes… Hopefully it’ll be more straightforward than the AC multiplayers!
