Guerrilla Games has announced that a multiplayer game set in the Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West universe is in development, doing so alongside advertising job openings at a new team in the Amsterdam studio.
“We are continuing to create epic solo adventures for Aloy. But there is more.” said Guerrilla Games on Twitter.
“A new internal team is developing a separate Online Project set in Horizon’s universe. Featuring a new cast of characters and unique stylized look, friends will be able to explore the majestic wilds of Horizon together.”
This confirms the previous rumours that Guerrilla were working on an online multiplayer game, and that it could be set in the Horizon universe. Sony and Guerrilla are keen to forge ahead with one of the breakout new IP of the last generation, with the full sequel Horizon Forbidden West launching earlier this year, and both a PSVR 2 spin-off, Call of the Mountain and Forbidden West story DLC confirmed for 2023. There’s also reports of a Horizon MMORPG in development with NCSoft, a remaster of Horizon Zero Dawn.
This will be a rather different prospect, though. While it makes sense for Aloy not to be a major character in this game, what’s interesting is the “unique stylized look”, which immediately conjures up something more cartoony. It also seems that this will be a co-op game, with the latest rumours suggesting that Guerrilla could lift the style and template of the Monster Hunter franchise.
I guess a multiplayer Horizon game wasn’t so stupid to talk about after all?
Regardless, this seems to be a way away from release, given the number of key lead designer roles and the notion that this is a new internal team.
There’s a diverse set of job openings within the studio, from ‘Stylized Creature Animator’ to ‘Lead Combat Designer’, ‘Game Writer’ and more. Many openings are specific to the Online Project, but there’s also openings more generally at Guerrilla Games, as well as specifically on single player content.
