The co-founder of Robust Games, Adam Riches, has revealed on BlueSky that he was asked to pitch an idea for a game based on the classic BBC sci-fi sitcom, Red Dwarf.
“A while back we had the wonderful opportunity to pitch a Red Dwarf adventure game directly to Doug Naylor himself,” he posted. “While the project didn’t end up going ahead, we’re now free to share some of the work we produced for the pitch!”
So far, a single image has been released, which shows pixel versions of Lister, Rimmer, Kryten and The Cat sat in the cockpit of Starbug. Although not explicitly stated it does seem that the game would have been a point and click adventure, like the classic Monkey Island.

Red Dwarf – the TV show – often had episodes set within video games with Better Than Life being the most famous. There was also a noir detective thriller Gumshoe, although Lister mainly used this to have sex with the blonde bombshell in the game, and Zero-G Kickboxing & Wimbledon also get a mention.
Red Dwarf’s finest episode, Gunmen of the Apocalypse, was also set in a video game named Streets of Laredo, a classic Western-style AR role-playing game.
While we do know that Adam’s Red Dwarf game was rejected, and thus making Mr. Flibble very angry, there’s always the possibility that other teams were asked, and there may yet still be a Red Dwarf game on the way, Given the response to Adam’s post on BlueSky it does appear there is demand for a decent game based on the franchise.
Sadly, the only official video games that existed were on mobile, and they were not good.
This has also reminded me that I made a Red Dwarf game in the Shoot ‘Em Up Construction Kit on the Amiga, I wonder if I still have that somewhere.

I’ve been re-watching them recently, Red Dwarf would be perfect for a point ‘n’ click, shame it didn’t work out.
