Much of the PS4 footage in this video was affected by a pre-release bug that made single player run 720p, making resolution based comparisons moot. It is to be addressed in a day one patch, but please see here for more information.
With Call of Duty: Ghosts, we were fortunate to have access to the different versions of the game at the review event, and also to be allowed to capture footage for ourselves.
So, what we’re showing you here today is a video comparing the PS3 and PS4 versions of the game. Our capture options maybe aren’t as perfect as others’, as we’re using Elgato’s Game Capture HD, but the settings were such that the video was recorded at high bit rates, before being put into the grinder that is video editing.
The PS4 was running at a pretty solid 1080p60 (though these videos are at 30 frames per second), and to my eyes looks rather pretty, even if it’s not going to be the most visually stunning title at launch. This is especially compared to the sub-HD PS3 version, which has noticeably poorer assets and suffers from pop-in on a handful of occasions.
Additionally, we have another video embedded below, which wasn’t quite ready in time for this morning’s review, showing off a load more PS4 footage.
Speaking of the review, here’s a handy link.
For the best idea of what these videos are showing, you should view them at 1080p, and maybe even on the TV that you use for gaming. Here are direct links to the comparison video, and the PS4 only video.

Blimey, I would say neither the Ps3 or the PS4 version look that great….
MikLSP
The PS4 version looks decent but the PS3 version seems to look awful.
Is it just me or does this look worse than other current PS3 games.
I’m not buying any cross-platform launch titles, let alone cross-generation; the lack of dedication and focus to at least the new generation suggests that games like this are unlikely to get much out of it.

I have a feeling that YouTube’s compression has utterly slayed the 720p version as it really does look terrible when it comes to general clarity and definition.
However, it’s interesting to see that the game will look decent on both respective platforms… you just need to not compare them if you get hung up on that sort of thing (not directed at MikLSP, here). :-)
I wonder if 1080p compression on YouTube is more generous than 720p or even more brutal as it tries to save on bandwidth.
Either way, Drive Club’s raw footage has shown us that we really need to be shown clips straight from the horse’s mouth. Interestingly, GameTrailers website video playback now supports 60FPS, I believe.
Cheers for the comparison, Tef. Great to see what the generational leap is going to offer console gamers for now.

As I said in the review that was posted recently, the PS4 version looks absolutely terrible. When you compare what we have seen from Killzone SP and Battlefield and other games, this just looks crap in all honesty. The lighting is current gen at least. It looks the same as current gen, just with sharpened graphics to make it look nicer, but in all still looks bad.
I don’t really care, I wont be touching it next gen anyway, but you would think they would put some more effort into making this HUGE game much nicer with the money they make from it each year.
bunimomike
You’re joking, aren’t you? The lighting is hugely different, in places, over the current gen. It’s one of the most obvious things in the comparison video.
However, I do agree with how average it looks compared to other options on the impending hardware. I know the CoD franchise has never been about looks but I can’t help but think Activision could create something stunning looking simply because they have the money to do so.
Ho-hum.
Bilbo_bobbins
No I’m not kidding. I watched the vid and noticed hardly any difference really, not worthy of next gen difference anyway. I’ve seen better lighting from games on the current gen compared to COD on the PS4 video above.
Maybe it’s just me, but I can’t help but think this game has become massively lazy.

I think it looks a lot nicer than current gen in the stuff I’ve seen,I’ve got the PS4 version sat on my game pile as I speak also got killzone bundle PS4 and battlefield 4 still to come, but I sure as hell wasn’t going to go with the PS3 version over the PS4 I think it looks a lot crisper and smoother than current gen that I’ve played over the years.

“…you would think they would put some more effort into making this HUGE game much nicer with the money they make from it each year.”
No, not really. See, McDonalds is one of the largest brands in the world and people flock there to buy their burgers. McD’s make massive profits and enjoy a super duper turnover on a global scale. But, their products are hardly top quality and certainly wouldn’t tempt me over a home cooked meal. You see, McD’s has figured out the quality to price ratio which will keep customers flocking… and so have Activision. They kept the same game engine for, what was it, 6 or 7 annual COD games in this gen and the games keep selling. Why spend money to improve the product?
Bilbo_bobbins
To make more money?
Michael
I like this.
cam_manutd
What they do with each new generation leap-build the game in current-gen state and then just up the res/textures etc for next-gen. Not that fussed about graphics in COD because that is not what I would play it for. Extinction sounds alright but after the gambles that Black Ops 2 took, I don’t think its worth the time.
Same goes for BF4 as they took Rush mode out of that :( so Killzone it is then :D
Bilbo_bobbins
Rush is in BF4?
cam_manutd
Apparently they took it out I read somewhere. Just checked the official site-its in :’)
Galgomite
Wow. The PS3 version looks like a Wii game by comparison, but I can’t get that excited about PS4 with a game that’s essentially the same across generations.
beeje13
Take YouTube footage with a few pinches of salt. Maybe you could upload a better quality vid to somewhere else?
wonkey-willy
really should of compared Xbox,x bone and ps3/ps4 versions
may of seen some big differences there..
cod has always been better on Xbox period.
had a peek on the lens of truth wasn’t any comparisons on there apart from battlefield 4
Wardy-77-
I don’t think MS have let many people even see most X1 games in action Battlefield Assassins Creed COD,and it’s looking like its going to be the other way round this gen.
wonkey-willy
absolutely right there matey.
just got shot of my xbox games controllers and broken 360 in anticipation of the ps4 lets hope sony can pull forward in the next gen race and be out on top this time..
Avenger
Tired of all this resolution crap (no offence against the article). CoD Ghosts is going to look decent on the PS3, be playable, and as enjoyable (?) as CoD can be. This is a multi-gen title so I don’t expect wonders, not to mention that they are across both platforms achieving 60FPS.
Roynaldo
Cod has been visually sub par for a few years now. Not even remotely interested this time round. Seems kinda boring now. Sticking with killzone as my fps fix.
lambchop
Yeah, kilxone all the way for my first nextgen shooter fix
