What We Played #174: Forza Horizon 2, Murasaki Baby & Destiny

Is it just me or is Destiny utterly soulless in single player? It’s a fairly rounded package and competent in what it does but it doesn’t feel like it excels at anything in particular. Maybe it’s because I seem to be the only level 10 player running around in it these days and I just haven’t got to the good stuff yet.

It is pretty popular within the TSA Team though and I’ll leave it to Aran to start their stories:

This week I have played Murasaki Baby and Destiny. Lots and lots of Destiny. I wrote a review on Murasaki Baby,  and it’s a decent puzzler set in a weird world.  Short though.

Been playing Destiny a lot both solo and with quite a few of the TSA staff. Finished the story missions and my advice is read the grimoire cards if you want any sense. Playing in a group is much better than solo too. Got to watch Tef punch a strike boss to death.

Which neatly segues us into Stefan’s tale of his modest exploits…

Basically I’ve just been hammering Destiny endlessly, trying to get levelled up to the point where I can do a Raid. My favourite moment so far was when finishing a Strike and I leapt in to deliver the final blow with my fists. It was glorious, and Blair was fairly well positioned to capture the moment:

Just imagine screaming some crazed war cry as I kept into the fray, and you’ve pretty much got the idea.

Clearly not content with impromptu Sparrow races in Destiny (sparrow racing sounds like it should be a Belgian national sport!) Dom has mixed up his sci-fi shooting with some four-wheel drifting:

This week I’ve been playing Destiny. I did think it was amazing, but the shine has gone off it a bit as I’ve played it for the last couple of days and only got one useful piece of gear. This has seen a couple of my friends leapfrog me as I was stuck on Level 20 for ages. This did not make me happy.

I also tried the Forza Horizon 2 demo, which is pretty and loud, but fundamentally doesn’t seem to offer anything I haven’t seen in various other racing games. It looks like Driveclub or The Crew will be this autumns’ racing game of choice.

And bringing proceedings to a close this week is Peter who adds some two-footed tackling to our gaming exploits:

I’ve played a bit more of the FIFA 15 demo and I’m warming to it. I think it’s in need of a little bit more tuning because I’m almost sure that my initial reaction to the harder tackling was down to the added emphasis on player strength and weight – that’s how it usually seems to play out but I do still get the odd instance when a small, light player seems to waltz through tackles.

I’ve also played a bit of the Forza Horizon 2 demo, and it’s every bit as enjoyable as the first. It’s also really quite beautiful, running in 1080p at 60 frames per second. It has a slightly weird intro video that sounds like the sort of hippy pseudo-hypnotic crap you’d expect from a shoeless backpacker on a Thai island except it’s about driving cars really fast and partying to a bass-heavy soundtrack.

I’m reviewing both of these games over the coming week or so too, so expect plenty more about them on the site soon.

Has your copy of Destiny lost its lustre or are you having a riot of a time in your level 26 raid?

  1. Transistor and Diablo 3 for me, loving them. If you want games with soul and a great story, those are well worth checking out.

  2. Skipped Destiny due to a serious minecraft addiction, KZSF new maps are in the mix too.

Should I go for Destiny given I’m feeling quite indifferent and will have more time for games when the next round of releases are out?

  3. I started the week by getting platinum out of Smart as on my Vita. I’ve also played Forza horizon 2 demo which was great. Winning eleven demo (PES to EU) which has some slight bugs but only demo and can be sorted. Also FIFA 15 early access which I was greatly disappointed with. Let’s say it plays different to the demo. Also a little bit of Destiny and Minecraft.

  4. Lots of Sniper Elite 3….although the collectables were glitch as hell (e.g. 22/22 sniper nests and no trophy), it seems another glitch fixed the problem! Despite having completed the game twice the last mission had disappeared from my Mission Select screen, therefore I had to replay the second to last level (for a third time) to unlock the last mission again, and when I did all the collectables set back to zero – so on collecting the sniper nests again I got the trophy!! Phew, panic over. Just two more levels to get all collectables on for platinum number 70!

Played a bit of TLOU multiplayer but there still seems to be connection and possible lag issues, which Naughty Dog are aware of. :(

Played loads of Might & Magic Clash of Heroes on iPhone again – brilliant game.

I even dragged the old Vita out and played a few Borderlands 2 missions. I find all the stats etc a bit overwhelming, especially as new weapon and armour pick-ups are so frequent and I constantly have to check which is best.

Sadly no Red Dead Redemption this week, was due to play last night but my wife decided not to go to work. :(

  5. Now that I’ve got friends who have Destiny, it’s got more appeal again, but in single player it seems too repetitive to be interesting. There’s a vague, rubbish story, and the same levels on repeat. Halo it is not.

Got some free time now, so Wolfenstein and Dead Rising 3 is on the cards, as is Hack n Slash and Dishonoured (finally… I bought it day one, still haven’t played it).

  6. The excellent Wolfenstein! I’m right near the end now, but will probs play through again straight away. Then it’ll be back to Far Cry Classic and gonna do some Far Cry 3 co-op with Youles.

    • Is Wed or Thu evening any good for you next week, I can be online about 19:30-22:30? :)

      • Yes mate. Should be fine.

      • Cool thanks, will message you Tuesday to confirm!

  7. Destiny. That is all.

Actually, really enjoying. Have played very little of it on my own which is probably why I find it such fun. Strike mission are fabulous.

  8. I want my first Destiny Legendary this weekend. I don’t hold out much hope, as my ‘research’ suggests that the drop rate for legendary engrams is somewhere LESS than 0.05% (based on 2000 kills last night without a drop)…

  9. Destiny all week. Ok, and that Plants vs Zombies game Sony decided to make the deal of the week too. Which is enormous amounts of fun, actually.

But Destiny, mostly. I’ve finally found something that might just give me an exotic weapon. There are bounties other than the usual red or grey ones. Yellow ones.

And it’s a long process to complete. Find a dead ghost, kill a story mission boss on “heroic” (hard), dismantle 10 rare or higher fusion rifles, then kill stuff on “epic” (which might mean the weekly nightfall strike thing).

Those 10 fusion rifles are going to be fun to get. Several thousand crucible matches would do it, but there’s probably an easier way ;)

No idea what causes the exotic bounties to appear though. They might just pop up at random at higher levels (25 here). Certainly makes things more fun again, just when I’d got my crucible/vanguard levels up so I could buy some gear with those marks.

Might be time for the raid soon.

  10. Lots more Diablo.
Quite a few rounds of golf in The Golf Club.
A few frames of Pure Pool.
A few more Destiny story missions (I’ve just unlocked Venus).
Some more Trine 2 multiplayer with Forrest and Pixel_nme.
