Evolution has announced that the PlayStation Plus edition of Driveclub has been delayed, with the main reason being problems with the servers. If you have bought the Plus upgrade of Driveclub then you will be able to download and play the game, albeit it’ll just be the single player portion. The servers have been suffering since yesterday when the game launched in North America. There’s no indication of when the Plus edition of Driveclub will go live yet. The companion app is also unavailable.
In order to help all DRIVECLUB players who have the game already, we’re temporarily holding back the PS Plus Edition and the My DRIVECLUB app to ease the load and traffic to the servers. This should give players a better chance of connecting to the game servers and, once the servers are operating well, we’ll be sure to let you know when the PS Plus Edition and My DRIVECLUB app will be available to download.
It’s definitely bad news for players and Evolution, especially since Driveclub has been a game many have been waiting for since its announcement. Of course we’ll keep you updated as soon as we hear anything new.

I just don’t understand how this happens with such regularity when any new online game releases. They must know the servers are going to be very busy. Destiny managed to do OK on release, they must have properly anticipated a very busy release, how come everyone else can’t do the same? I honestly don’t understand.
Isn’t it a simple case of renting some extra servers for a couple of weeks at release to handle the initial traffic?
Carrot381
Microsoft have probably got an exclusive deal for the worlds available servers.
bunimomike
This is my thinking on it, fella.
Devs stress-test servers so they can see if it’ll handle the projected load *childish snigger* when the game gets released online. Sadly, they don’t test said servers with actual people playing through the game, logging scores, generally buggering around, etc. With that in mind, there’s always something us humans can discover that a bit of code simply can’t allow for.
I used to test software for my colleagues as they didn’t think like me. I’d often break it in moments with them slack-jawed as to why I’d even do such things to their lovely programs. :-)
The above is an opinion based on a few educated guesses but nothing more. Do with it as you please. :-P
bunimomike
When I say “actual people” I mean millions of the buggers.

“I’d often break it in moments with them slack-jawed as to why I’d even do such things to their lovely programs” – Crikey! If I give you 2 dolls, can you do a reenactment of what you did to their programs?
Amphlett
“I’d often break it in moments with them slack-jawed as to why I’d even do such things to their lovely programs.” – The mark of a good tester! Do you want a job?
bunimomike
Dave – Oh… we’ll need more dolls than that. Probably best to give the solicitor who handled the Michael Jackson cases. He’ll have loads of them.
Amphlett – *prepares CV* :-P

I was just going to post myself “And after Destiny launched surprisingly trouble free.” You’d think server issues were a thing of the past, and devs/publishers knew what to expect these days.
bunimomike
I’m not overly familiar with Destiny’s roll-out but didn’t they have a good quality (open) Beta? If so, that’s where they managed to iron-out the server issues – or most of them.
GTOWN
Destiny got round server issues by having ridiculous load times. I’m sure that’s how they managed a stress free launch.
Kennykazey
Well, both the PSN and Bungies website halted to a crawl, and basically went down (but you could get through with persistent attempts) the first handful of hours of the beta.
I think the launch went alright though.
Mr Blighty
DDOS from upset xbone fanboys. Actually they haven’t sold enough xbone for a ddos.
Kennykazey
Xbox One may run on three layers of operating systems, but none of them are DOS. Hah!
Carrot381
Was quite looking forward to having a go on that later too.
CallofDylan
This is so obviously Microsofts fault. I bet they have hacked the server. Dylan
double-o-dave
Evidently. Any free tickets available so I can hop on to your magic roundabout? Sounds fun there. :)
boeboe
Thanks D.
xIONx
I heard Bill and Melinda took a day out from philanthropic endeavours to personally hack the servers.
bunimomike
Microsoft’s fault. Devs are reporting on Twitter that Microsoft engineers have replaced the modern-day CPUs in the Evolution servers with Zilog Z80A chips from the Sinclair Spectrum PC (circa. 1990).
blarty
But do they work better with the Cloud
bunimomike
They could barely render Horace Goes Skiing properly. Clouds are far too ambitious… unless we just snap the legs off a sheep and throw it into the air.
Carrot381
I bloody well loved Horace goes Skiing. Put hours and hours into that game :)
double-o-dave
I’m pretty sure I (or my brother should I say) had all 3. Horace goes Skiing, Hungry Horace and Horace and The Spiders. I have no idea how I just remembered them although I can’t for the life of me remember any Hungry Horace gameplay.
Carrot381
Wasn’t Hungry Horace more or less the same as pacman?
double-o-dave
That sounds about right.
Starman
Servers can’t cope already when its not even out everywhere yet. It really is time they invested in some more servers. There really is no excuse for this.
Tuffcub
And this is why you should have an open Beta, like Destiny, and get millions on at once.
Youles
Yup, was saying this the other day. FIFA – which releases every year – still has sever issues and even on Monday, weeks after release they were running like dog shit.
Whilst I’m not a fan of Destiny, their preparation – even asking people to be online at a particular time together – to test traffic should be applauded.
And Sony need to pull their finger out with PSN – there are still issues when the Store updates (mostly with PS+ content), when CoD DLC is released, and just in general. My friends’ list still doesn’t load a lot of the time, which makes inviting people in-game impossible sometimes.
woodsy321
I agree completely – they’ve even had an extra year the useless t**ts.
And we pay for PSN nowadays, we could forgive a little when it was free…..

Even a closed beta would be a start.
KittDJW
Completele agree, A game with such a potentially huge on-line community.. Especially as they are giving a version away with plus needed an open Beta.
Eldaveo
Hmm, I was hovering over the “buy” button for the £35 upgrade edition but now I’m not so sure. PSN servers strike again!
Forrest_01
Ah, so that’s why PSN was so juddery last night. We had speculated that it was perhaps because of the Driveclub launch (which I realise it may not have been & may have been PSN throwing a wobbly for some other reason), but that is quite disappointing after the delays & whatnot.
KittDJW
The PSN is starting to feel a bit crowded and overloaded, it’s been juddery and up and down like a yo-yo.. Let’s home Monday’s maintenance sorts most of it out.. Fingers crossed more servers.
quinkill
Now that’s what I call embarrassing. delayed by almost a year and then the ps+ version most of us have been waiting for gets delayed a few hours before release!
bladesew
So people who bought the physical edition get to play on line, while those of us who paid for the plus upgrade don’t? Way to go Evolution.
woodsy321
I heard the Plus upgrade people can play too. Its just us freeloaders on the free plus edition that have to wait.
Stefan L
Yes, plus upgrade just counts as the full game. What’s happening is that the PS+ edition itself is being held back while they try to shore up the servers, at which point those with the full game will be able to get online again, before they try to open the floodgates once more for PS+.
englishgolfer
I have the physical version and can’t access any online so it’s not that.
