Final Fantasy XIII-2 Will Be Darker, Better

It’s all Japanese magazine news this morning, with Famitsu rival Dengeki speaking with famed Final Fantasy producer Yoshinori Kitase and director Motomu Toriyama.

Likely disappointing few, the Square Enix duo have confirmed that Final Fintasy XIII spin-off XIII-2 will shun its progenitor’s “pop” feel and will instead infuse a sense of darkness in the title. The game is also viewed as the perfect companion to XIII, with the events shown in XIII-2 depicting what happened behind the scenes in the previous title.

The goddess Etro will be a central part of the story, and while we’ve seen Lightning all geared up in questionably functional armour, other XIII characters will also feature albeit with “unexpected changes.”

The interview also touches upon how the team have taken the criticism aimed at Final Fantasy XIII to heart, with the numerous brickbats and opinions aimed at the title becoming helpful critiques they’ve listened to when designing XIII-2.

  1. I must not be the only one that is part excited/part disappointed about this game and it’s direction. I loved the feel of FFXIII, thought it was a superb game. So sad to see them changing the feel of it.

On the other hand, another chance to play with Lightning and another chance (hopefully) to run around Pulse!!

  2. FF13 was my first FF game and I played only a little bit but I loved it….got to many games to complete so stopped until my exams are over.

  3. need to finish 13 before this arrives! For my sake I hope its a 2012 release!

    • Teaser said it would be released this winter.

      • thought that was the japanese release. Hoping so anyway

      • You forget there is always a mandatory delay with FF titles coming to Europe. Don’t get too excited yet :(

  4. Darker than making a small child watch his mother fall to her death?

    • Yeah he’ll be forced to wear her head as a hat for the entire game. Her blood will continuously drip into his eyes and as he passes, everyone will shout mummies boy at him.

    • Ugh don’t remind me, the amount he spent whining about it I wish he had fallen to his death instead.

  5. at least they can listen. let’s see if this new generation of ff developers can take on criticism… the pop feel can work. 10 had a light-hearted feel in a lot of its scenes, and some of 7 was downright slapstick, but both of those games were backed up by some of the most memorable characters and scenes of the last two generations. there has always been points in every final fantasy, with obvious exceptions, that I’ve wanted to replay every few months. I can think of nothing in ffxiii that I’d want to replay. but it did sell loads, so it widened the fanbase of final fantasy. and that’s what they wanted.

  6. I liked XIII, it will be interesting to see what XIII-2 will do. Perhaps the darker tone will tie in some how with Vs XIII. Maybe this one will play more like X and less like XII (not to say XII was bad, but personally I prefer X or even VII style) We shall see.

    • I’ll say it! XII was bad. Hated it!!

  7. I personally think they need to do something with the story, imo,XIII was a very poor story.

  8. I enjoyed FF13 but i also felt that it was kind of hallow which is why im still at one specific point, i have little to no motivation to continue (but of course now i have a little motivation)

if its sexual is any less hallow then i may enjoy it more (hell ill probably be able to Finnish the main story in one go) but the trophies are another thing completely.

though regardless of how better Xiii2 is, im still more excited for FF Versus :)
