PSN Maintenance Today

Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 8:14 am

News

We’ve just had word that the PSN will be down today from 4PM, for approximately 5 hours.  The service might be up and down during that time as the magic Sony pixies do their techie stuff.

Speculation abound that this is for the Life With PlayStation update, but it could be another Home upgrade too.  Or it might unlock the 8th PPE.  Or PS2 compatibility.  Or Dreamcast emulation.

Or might just be for general geeky stuff that we’ll never hear about.  Yeah. Whoever gives the funniest explanation for the downtime in the comments will win a prize, assuming they’re UK-based.

On the dawn of the 27th, when joypads rest in hands,
A new update shall arrive, but will it meet demands?
Could it be the beta, for the illusive Home,
Or perhaps it’s just another empty promise created to make us groan?
So as I sit and speculate, I sit and wish for more,
Will this be the update, that leaves me sat in awe?
Yes I say with crooked smile and my fingers crossed so tight,
I’m fed up of always being treated by SCEE like a piece of shite.
Empty promises and more delays is how it used to be,
But I have a feeling were going to see more from SCEE.
Heavy Rain demo, Open Home beta, maybe a surprise or two,
Maybe a new game mode that auto-plays whilst you pop to the loo!
Wait a minute, what are these words, that spool from out my mouth,
Coming from a good ol’ Gloucester boy, by the way that’s down south.
Why must I speak positively of such an ignorant team?
When all they do is delay things and are generally quite mean.
I had a dream, a prophecy you might say,
I saw myself a 360, just the other day.
With three red lights and engulfed in flames, something came to me.
I have the worlds greatest console and it’s called the PlayStation3.
Even if it all sucks - the update, down time, or whatever,
Just be thankful that YOUR console is 10,000 leagues better.

Whoops, went a bit off topic. Hmm, well, I think we’ll see:

More Home beta invites sent out soon,
More stable servers and less issues,
Some sort of surprise on PSN.

That’s before the end of August. I’m off to rhyme now.
La la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la.

or they could be just doing a mass defragging, followed by some serious ctrl+alt+del, followed by “This had better work”,followed by a mass worldwide sigh as everything is ready to go again, followed by “oh wait….thats not right”, followed by techies running around in mad panic as the servers wont reboot and seem to have wiped everyone stats away in all the online games giving people like me a chance to get some ‘Im gonna get even time’ with some o those hardcore warhawkers, nd so and so forth.

I think they’re having a closed server party to celebrate not being beheaded by rabid ThreeSpeechers at Leipzig next week. That or they’re taking eyepet out for a virtual walk in the PSN park.

Black and shiny, the PS3 represents the Emo lifestyle so it has to go to its room and cry for a few hours because its parents just don’t understand it.

I’m guessing that it’s just a new start-up screen, so when you turn your Playstation on it just plays the song “Homeward Bound” by Simon and Garfunkle. Just to keep us busy until Home comes out on the PS4.

Oh, and general inproved stability for playstation titles, of course.

I’ve just read that a friend of mine who ‘knows someone’ who looks right and has seen ’something’ will tell you, for five English pounds, that she is pretty sure that they are converting your PS3 into an ATM this afternoon and that special and beautiful ‘Leipzig’ dollars will flow endlessly from that little slot that you put Blu Ray porn into…

But of course, I could be wrong…

I have a theory. Last time the beta invites were sent out, there was downtime on the tuesday, so i’m guessing that this thursday, more beta invites are being sent out - maybe they are upgrading the servers to cope with the extra amount of people?

I don’t think its related to life with playstation because it’s a seperate app, and not linked to psn?

Anyways, whatever happens, lets hope its something. :P

HOME WILL COME!!!!!!!. This down time is for Home to be released on to the servers.

(now that IS a silly answer)

The PSN is down because a special HOME taster demo will be released, but for only 5 hours at 4pm. So to stop there servers crashing, and the whole internet imploding. They will take down the servers until the bonus HOME experience is over..

Right, I’ve just been on the phone to my local sources and it looks like there’s nothing to get excited about.

Jim from accounting had another premonition the other day that the new intern, Norbert (Norb to his mates), will trip over the power supply to the main PSN server (called Big ‘n’ Beefy) leaving only the veggie options to cope with the massive demand. Veggie ‘n’ Lite and Vegan ‘n’ Wussy won’t be able sustain the meat of the PSN resulting in down time.

    Hope this clears things up.

Jim’s never been wrong so I’d get all your meat based online goodness stocked up to the hilt before Norb takes a little ‘trip’.

What about a new look for the PS Store. I think they should match it with the new TSA website.
And while there at it get rid of the stupid “tings” that you hear every time i select a category I want to look into.

psn will be down for 5 hours to make it look like SCEE are actually working on something. they’re not. theres just 2 guys in a room with a big red switch watching Top Gear repeats on ‘Dave’. after 5 hours they flick the switch back on. another hard day at the office…

did i win a prize? no? oh well..

My Dads wives brother works for Sony, and he just told me it’s Sony Germany instigating the downtime because Hasselhoff’s got himself stuck in the PSN server farm while trying to implement his homebrew Guitar Hero track-pack.

We don’t hear enough of Hasselhoff these days. I wonder what he’s up to.

Apart from getting stuck in the PSN server farm, I mean.

Probably working on something tremendous ;)

My serious guess as to what the downtime is though is probably an upgrade ready for tomorrows Warhawk patch.

We can live in hope it’ll be for something special though ;)

Yeah, I signed in half an hour or so ago.

I think I know what the downtime was for; there was none! Sony have, in their recent times of disappointing people, decided to at least enjoy messing with everyone’s heads. So they announced downtime - when there wasn’t going to be any. So we’re all guessing at what it could bring whilst they’re laughing their asses off and drinking expensive wine, secure in the knowledge that they can mess with us as much as they want to.

Well I have been testing Home for over one year now and downloaded the open Home on the 16th. They was a small 16 meg update file I installed last nite with seeing nothing special going on. Home is not the reason the PSN was down.
