Codemasters have outlined their plans for the new Formula 1 racing game which is to be released later this year.

OK, so all they say is that they will be bringing back the franchise to multiple formats and that they don’t just want it to be one year’s big release but a phased approach.

A phased approach, what does that mean? Maybe we’ll get DLC tracks released when the real F1 circuit arrives at a location?  Maybe they intend linking real-world telemetry data for each meeting to the teams in-game?

I’m sure now that Killzone 2 is out GamerRiley will set his obsessive personality to this and let us all know how each stage of development is going…

Any ideas what “Phased approach” means? Discuss in the comments…

  1. Dunno perhaps they’re going to do a Criterion, and release a ton of FREE stuff to build up a fan base who then may buy the paid for stuff.

  2. Hmmm interesting idea that, release tracks as they race them. What about fully updatable game where every aspect from the real life season is reflected in the game such as weather (whenever you play a track it checks the weather at that time) team’s performance and drivers performance. This could be very cool.
I still won’t be getting it though cos I’m not too fond of the driving sims. Conceptually though, my version gets a thumbs up! ;)

  3. I’m desperate for a new Formula 1 game. I hope we don’t have to wait too long to play it :(

  4. I cannot wait!!! F1:CE was my first PS3 game i got on launch day.. Been waiting for this since Lewis came into F1. I just hope “phased release” doesn’t mean Xbox exclusive for 3 months….

  5. very interesting I just hope it is staged releases of tracks etc and not a phased approach across the platforms – I would be gutted to see an F1 game released on xbox 1st

  6. Maybe they’re building the engine, the circuits etc… But then each season, the game will be updated via DLC, rather than a brand new game like in the past on PS1/PS2

  7. I recall the executive producer on the Codemasters forums saying they plan this to be a series, so I guess they plan annual updates. Whether this equates to new games each year or updates / dlc, I don’t know. However, phased approach sounds like something else but I don’t think it would be tracks as they come…

As they showed their first track scan on the forums, I’m thinking this game is a ways off. Also, the track was Spa, which isn’t being raced until 30 Aug 2009 so if it were a phased approach regarding tracks, surely they would start with the initial races.

  8. Thanks Cb, no I’m not to obsessive about this yet, only because there is very little information about the game. Codemasters are very tight lipped about this. I just hope they don’t fuck it up and make it too arcadey for the Americans.
As for the phased approach I think I do know what that means. I read an interview with Rod Cousens of Codemasters where he discussed a virtual F1. From what I gather, you will complete a season as the F1 calendar evolves. You will get up to the minute data from the actual drivers racing on the actual circuit, tyre wear, grip, balance etc. The weather conditions will match the actual weather conditions on the day. Every single bit of info possible will come down the phone line and tell your PS3 what to do. Amazing if it works.

    • They have made it clear that Dirt nd Grid were aimed at different markets, and that this will be a sim (the executive producer of F1 09 has clarified this on their forums), with aids, features and presentation to make it accessible to all. Some of the detail they’re going into is sounding great for the hardcore… i.e. they mentioned their track surface module that handles rubber being laid down and surface water. Also, laser scanned tracks show they’re approaching this in the right way (i.e. do the job properly).

I think their approach to this game is sounding great. Many great people involved at and with Codemasters. Lots of F1 nuts (internal and external), devs from past F1 games, a great lead sound guy with a lot of experience and credit, acceptance of fans ideas (which may or may not make it in), good communication. Codemasters know how to make a good game… I guess the only doubt that can now be dispersed is that this will be a sim.

    • So real world telemetry? That’s what I speculated! I win!

      • I would like to say I speculated in May ‘08. I just feel bad for not telling TSA.

  9. I have found the interview I talked about, I’ll post it in the forums.

  10. Maybe saying it won’t be one year’s big release but a phased approach means that rather than release a great game to begin with, it’ll come out yearly and be shit the first year or two then get better? ;o)

  11. surely the sub heading on this is referring to nascar?

that is just glorified driving in a circle… (I know its oval and as such not a circle but really… its stupid)

  12. Glad Codies are doing this, Grif was amazing.

    • Typo! Grid not Grif

  13. In alternative news, some developer somewhere is making a game about paint drying, if you watch it long enough, you get the second level which is watching grass grow.
Level 3 is going round a circuit endless amount of times until the one in the best car wins despite the authorities trying to fix it against him, no knows what’s next as nobody has ever stopped awake long enough to complete it.

  14. Codemasters, where blurry graphics and central pivot points on cars are current gen (GRID, DiRT….)
