Netflix Coming To (US) PS3s? [8]

I’ll qualify this post with a disclaimer: I can’t guarantee the following information is correct. However, I will say that this morning’s rather excitable post about the PS3 getting Netflix warrants further investigation. Thus, I’ve since read that the service isn’t actually Netflix on PS3, it’s merely “Netflix on Blu-ray”, and thus will, in theory, work with any internet enabled Blu-ray device. Let me explain:

The disk that our American cousins will be getting won’t be to install software onto your PS3’s XMB, and won’t be replaced with a firmware update any time soon. Why? Because the Netflix disk is a Blu-ray movie, and once playing the PS3 (or indeed, any Blu-ray player) will be able to then connect to the Netflix server via the magic of BD-Live, and then stream your required movie that way.

There’s also no talk of bit-rate or resolutions, which gives further weight to the notion that this will just be BD-Live streaming, rather than an XMB-based 1080p solution.  Does this make the service any less important for Sony?  Possibly, possibly not – whether you’re bothered or not will depend on how integrated a service you wanted Netflix to be on the PlayStation 3.  Again, this is just speculation…

  1. If this is the case, hopefully it’ll become successful enough where it’s an option on the PSN and software is simply downloaded to the PS3 HDD. Also, subscribe through the PSN.

    • You’re because we’ll only need the disc for Late 2009 and a bit of Early 2010, but from there, it will NOT  require the blu-ray disc and’ll be 100% made for the PS3, but the disc will remain same for the blu-ray players with BD-Live Streaming = P
The Xbox 360 version is RUBBISH, no offence you MS Fans but I HATE YOU!!!
      RRARRRGGGHHHH lool = )

  2. it’s still a damn site more than we’ll see in europe any time soon.

    • I feel your pain and I am in Canada ( No Netflix Streaming here )

  3. i thought we were getting a service in November? from Sony in the UK

  4. I’m sure we will find out at some point soon.

I really wanna know though – is it gonna be a proper dedicated app that we can watch all the US people have fun on while we grumble over here?
Or just what you have highlighted in this article – which to be honest doesn’t seem great.

  5. “Initially, watching movies instantly streamed from Netflix via the PS3 system will be enabled by a free, instant streaming Blu-ray disc that is being made available to all Netflix members. The free instant streaming disc leverages Blu-ray’s BD-Live(TM) technology to access the Internet and activate the Netflix user interface on the PS3 system, which must be online via Wi-Fi or Ethernet.”

The service will need a disc ‘initially’ so whether that means it will be on XMB eventually remains to be seen. My money would be on a PS Store app that US users can choose to download for free, just like how they added VidZone to the EU Store.

The interesting thing about the press release though is that it is completely PS3 centric and they even have a PS3 streaming section on their website, surely if you could put this disc in any blu-ray player the release would mention it? It sounds to me that the disc is designed to work specifically with the PS3…

    • Well, I’m glad I’m not the only one that noticed that magical word. :)

    • The reason it’s not on the XMB is down to Microsofts timed exclusivity deal as soon as that runs out there’ll be a FW update which will add the App/shortcut to US PS3 models. Simples.

  6. Well, I guess my immense post on your first article was pointless…

Anyways, the press release does say “initially”, which could mean that it won’t always work through BD-Live. It could also be referring to the fees associated with the service…

    • Ah, but it was an interesting read at the time!!! ;)

  7. I need this disk.

  8. Apparently the Disc is so that they can get round their exclusivity deal with Microsoft.
