We’ve got the full technical details in on the PlayStation Move, and it’s a lengthy read.  We’ll skip to the good stuff, though, and highlight the best bits.

Essentially, Move uses a “combination of the PS3 system and PlayStation Eye camera” to detect the precise movement, angle, and absolute position in 3D space of the PlayStation Move motion controller.

The PlayStation Move motion controller (code: CECH-ZCM1) includes a three-axis gyroscope, a three-axis accelerometer, and a terrestrial magnetic field sensor, as well as a color-changing sphere that is tracked by PlayStation Eye camera.

The PlayStation Move sub-controller (code: CECH-ZCS1) is one-handed, pairs with the motion controller and comes with an analog stick and directional buttons.  It doesn’t appear to feature the motion control functions, though.

Both the Move and the sub-controller use Bluetooth and come with built in lithium-ion rechargeable batteries, enabling charging via the mini USB port, as per normal with PlayStation 3 equipment.

Both are billed for a “Fall 2010″ release date.

  1. Q-Games :D

    • Also the first one that jumped out at me. Looks like I’ll be contacting Dylan. What time is it in Kyoto? Ah …nearly 7pm. He’ll probably be still in the office!
      :P

      • He’s in San Fran, I think.

    • That one caught my eye too!
      .
I miss quantic dream though. Shouldn’t David Cage already be working on Heavy Rain 2 supporting the Move? It would make sense in my book…

      • Do you think this could perhaps relate to the 3d title Q-games suggested might be in the works a few months back?

      • The won’t be a Heavy Rain 2.

      • Q Games and quantic dreams are not the same.
        .
Q Games did mention that they were working on a brand new game as well as the next episode of shooter and that rumoured revisit to Racer, so maybe the next new game will be controlled with the Move.
        .
quantic dreams made Heavy Rain. Heavy Rain 2 with motion controls was just me thinking out loud, but I still think it would make for an even more immersive experience.

  2. So the sub controller is like a mini Dual Shock 3, which is used to assist these games with extra buttons and a stick?

It’s good to see a fair few 3rd parties has pledged support for this – haven’t been overly impressed by what I have heard from the coverage so far but am still optimistic. Sony does have a way to go yet though if they hope to wrestle some market share off Wii.

    • I’m assuming that, if you didn’t want to pay for half a DualShock3, you still have the option of holding your DualShock3 in one hand like the guy was doing during the Resi Evil 5 demo at the TGS…
      .
Regardless though I still have this nagging worry that Sony dropped the ball by not having the light sensor on the sub-controller – the only way to have movement in two-handed games now is to using the Heavy Rain method and have a button for ‘walking forward’ and use the light sensor for ‘head direction’…

      • You either get the choice of 2 x PS Move’s where you can’t move around a game space, so the typical motion/social gaming experience.
Or you can completely replace your SA/DS3 with a PS Move + Sub, but then only one hand has motion controls.

Don’t really think its an issue, and its obviously done to keep it as good value as possible, however some basic motion controls wouldn’t have gone amiss

  3. Square Enix Group :D

  4. I must admit, Sony are impressing me with this add on now.

I might actually get this as the fighting game and golf is interesting for me.

    Metal Gear Solid: Move anyone………

I am keeping watch it and wait to be fully wowed…….

    • You just KNOW Kojima-san has already dreamed up the perfect MGS game with this in mind.

  5. it makes sense that the sub-controller does not feature motion control as they have said in Dev Diaries the way the controller works is by precisely tracking the “ball on the stick” (I’m paraphrasing of course). And seeing as the images show it doesn’t have a ball on the top I wouldn’t have expected it to be motion controlled

    • They just didn’t want the half ass job the Wii nunchuck does of motion control, so it looks like when the Sub Controller is used in games (obviously with the PS Move itself) then it’s a straight up replacement for the SA/DS3. They did say that there’s not a game or genre it couldn’t feature in.
I wonder if it could give you the ‘edge’ in FPS?

For the traditional motion control games it looks like you just use either one or two PS Moves (gonna be quite pricey for multiplayer if you need 4 of the buggers for a two player game (plus 2 Subs for so 2 people can play motion controls in normal games)

      • I have to say, buying 4 x DS3 controllers (at £35 a pop) certainly stung a bit but one a month took the edge off the whole price. Same will go for these, I’m sure. If things are looking solid in the games department then I could see myself picking up a couple in the beginning. I have the Eye already so that keeps things a little bit leaner.

      • “I wonder if it could give you the ‘edge’ in FPS?”

While not completely the same thing, having tried COD4 on the Wii, I’d have to say no, its a fiddly nightmare to control with a nunchuck, and accuracy aside I’d expect the same with this..

    • I read earlier that the Sub Controller may still come with motion control – I think it was on kotaku (they spoke to a Sony Rep at GDC)

      • They said ‘optional’ several times during and after the presentation, so I wouldn’t get your hopes up

      • I’m not too bothered but I don’t want them to leave it out and then decided a year or two on that they’re going to add it to the Sub.

  6. Good work last night chaps, sorry I wasnt around

  7. After watching/reading most of the information on the “Move”, I have to say I’m pretty impressed. It seems that Sony are going to go the distance with it, not just have it as some tacked on accessory. Looking forward to seeing more (at E3 maybe?).

  8. Is it me or are Take Two missing from that list? No Motion control in any Rockstar games then.

    • There’s a few devs I know that have the tech but aren’t on the list.

      • Maybe that’s the list that are actually working on games right now then, still though even that is an impressive list.

    • Naughty Dog are missing too.

      • I don’t think any Sony owned developers are there except SOE which are still technically a third party as they are not under the SCE umbrella.

  9. Everything I’ve seen over the last 24 hours is really positive. Seems like they are taking this very seriously, pricing it reasonably and have lots of big name third parties on board, including people like Q-Games who I can see making really innovative titles for it.
I was sceptical when details first started emerging but I have to say they are winning me over

  10. :D Told you it was ace.
