We’ve had word off the record that the PS3 should, at some point, get background downloading for game patches. One of my few personal issues with the PS3 (and indeed modern gaming in general) is that every time the developers patch a game you need to sit and wait for the new version to download before you can play online. However, if our source is to be believed, this could change.
Naturally, Sony aren’t commenting on this one, and we do have to stress that this is very much a rumour at this point as TheSixthAxis cannot verify the information but if the PS3 can figure out which games you own (or at least, have played recently) and automatically grab the latest patches in the background whilst you play another game then this would make at least one person very happy indeed.
Potentially rather brilliant – so how do you feel about this?

one of the most irritating things.
When I got my new slim, I spent around half a day just inserting my game discs and starting them up just to install game data and download patches etc so when I came around to playing them it would hopefully just be a matter of firing them up

If there’s a lot of updates, I just quit ant play something else… which is kind of annoying.

And after that, they can work on getting remote PC controls working so you can set your playstation to patch something while you’re at work and it’s ready for you when you get home!

You don’t need to download patches to play offline….

Yes but some patches fix bugs with offline, others add features, and then the rest are for online…
Plus you’d still have to wait if you wanted to go online. The point being that if you want to play a game, and there’s a patch, you shouldn’t need to wait for it download then install, what if you have a slow internet connection, you wouldn’t want to wait hours for that to download.

but at the start of the article he specifically stated offline. I noticed that, I think he meant to say online.

Some games include new DLC in the updates so what you buy is actually just an ‘unlock key’. This is usually games where you need the content on your console in order to display other people online who have it (like Burnout).
If you want to use the DLC offline, you have to update.

If there’s some really show stopping, I’m sure it’d be worth the wait, but aside from that, if you want to do SP, just skip the patches for the hour you want to play, and do them afterwards.
Sure, if it’s for the MP, then you’ll need it, but for SP not really.
This wont have any effect on buying a new game. You’ll still have the patch or no patch dilemma. And if a patch turns up you’ll still have to wait through the install if that’s the game you want to play.

It would make gaming on the PS3 more enjoyable. Its rather annoying when you have a spare half an hour so decide to boot up the ps3 for a quick game but have to wait to download patches. Particularly with PSN games, which I play to waste 5 mins while I’m waiting to go out.

Too right, everyone downloads patches… hardly anyone who I know uses “that other thing” when it applies to a single game.
Skype would be better :)

I’ve been moaning about this since day one! If they do finally do it, it will be a massive relief (but i’ll still probably moan about how long it took)
