We have seen from the Microsoft E3 Presentation that the new 360 is slim enough to fit inside the old 360 case (unless Microsoft used a special enlarged one, but they would not do that would they?) but it seems it might be packing a little something extra in the box.
Engadget have some press pack photos up on their site and the shot of the back of the new 360 ‘slim’ seems to show a standard two-pin mains connector. That suggests that Microsoft might have got rid of the 360’s power brick and built the power supply into the console, just as the PS3 has always done.
The probable lack of an external power supply is another good reason to consider a 360 upgrade. Of course the downside is that it means they have packed another heat source into the already fragile 360 innards. You can be pretty certain though that Microsoft will have taken a very careful look at cooling for this new 360, they will not want to write off another billion dollars or so on warranty and they will want the Kinect-related hardware relaunch to go well.
The photo of the 360’s rear is below and you can head on over to Engadget for the rest of the shots. While you may not be able to get it today at least you have some more time to think about upgrading or buying into the Xbox brand.
Update: I was wrong. It has got an external power supply after all, though it is “smaller and more efficient”. Check out the spec list below.

Watchful
Where it says due for release 16th July…
Mikiyaru
yeah thats the European release date

I know it’s stupid, but I don’t like to see the chassis of a console, its like something’s missing.
Jas-n
Also only Microsoft could make something smaller whilst making it look bigger.
Serebii.Net
I can’t stop laughing what you wrote..
You are right though, if they didn’t put them side-by-side, I would have thought they where the same size :P
AllTheApesEscaped
I think they subbed the design out to Alienware
G_The_Enemy14
If they have then it’s another selling point. One of the main problems with the 360 is that damn brick. :p
Kevling
Sony! Look! USBs at the REAR!
Jas-n
I miss the PS3 concept… had 2 HDMI ports too.
td_rules
Sony! Look! Built in wi-fi, power supply, slot in/out HDD, and sleek black design.
WAIT A MINU-
Watchful
Still a proprietary HDD on the new 360 though. Not off-the-shelf replaceable like the PS3s.
paulleeper2430
I really cant decide whether to buy a 360 or not it’s a hard choice

Toss a coin!

IGN live blog just claimed: “The power supply will also be smaller and more efficient”
mayflame
That’s what I was thinking too, maybe the 360 will use less power just like Sony did with the PS3 Slim
Bladesteel
Picture of specs on engadget states “Power supply: Smaller and more efficient. Xbox 360 250GB and XBox 360 original power supplies are not interchangeable”.
Sound like an external power supply to me.
Watchful
Yeah, it is an external supply. That wasn’t up earlier.
Bladesteel
Didn’t expect it was. They were adding to the article piece by piece.
You said above that it’s a proprietary HD. Where does it say that? All I can find is that it’s internal and the old 360 HDDs won’t fit.
Watchful
They took one out of the new 360 on the GameTrailers feed after the MS press conference. The HDD is in what looks like a sealed, plastic, custom enclosure.
Bladesteel
Bad move by MS then. How much do they make from the HDD sales anyway?
Bladesteel
Unboxing pictures up at engadget. Showing among other things the “HDD plastic block”. Unfortunately they don’t show the connector on it, so no way to tell if it’s just a standard drive in a plastic box, or some extra electronics in there. Anyone see a picture of the “plug end” of the disc?
The power brick does look smaller, but that doesn’t make much difference to the amount of cable spaghetti.
Watchful
Kotaku show the connectors on their video. Proprietary.
Bladesteel
Kotaku doesn’t know what they are talking about!
That looks very much like the end of a regular sata 2.5″ laptop drive sticking out. If you do a google image search for “Sata 2.5 inch” and compare it to the video at 0:31 left you’ll see what I’m talking about.
Unless MS has done something in the software to lock it to specific HDD models and sizes I expect to see third parties selling plastic cases that fit around standard 2.5″ drives.
I actually like the way they have done it, cause if you buy a “prepackaged” drive it’s a lot less scary for nontechnical people than swapping the PS3 HD is. (That is unless it’s FW locked, if so they are evil)

I don’t see why people even fussed over a brick anyway. I just keep mine behind the desk. Or keep it behind your TV, or on the floor against the wall in a tidy position. Why people complained about it I will never know, lol.
stonyk
Because I have a glass cabinet which doesn’t hide anything
Danza Di Fuoco
It was ugly Radiitz, when I use to own a Xbox it was huge!! surprised Nintendo haven’t done this yet…
AllTheApesEscaped
I always used to smirk at fanboys bickering about console size, especially when the xbots would compare the 360 to the phat ps3 and just so happened to forget the brick in their calculations (yes calculations, even saw people quoting volume!)
Bahamut44-4
Is the HDMI out v1.2 like the old 360’s, 1.3 like the PS3 or the new 1.4?
ruinereraser
1.360 ;)
Bahamut44-4
Oh you. ;P Seriously anyone?
