Sony At E3: 11th Hour Predictions

This is potentially Sony’s biggest E3 for years, and they really don’t have to do an awful lot to come out on top of Microsoft this time.  We’ve already covered how easy it should be for them, but just as a little warm-up let’s have a look at some last minute predictions.  Feel free to add your own in the comments, of course, and we’ll see who’s right later tonight!

PSN Premium

Pretty much a lock, Sony’s upgraded, expanded PlayStation Network will offer content, features and options above and beyond the current free service, which won’t be crippled in any way.  We’re looking towards discounts, cross game chat and early access to new stuff for those willing to pay the fee, which is probably going to be around £5 a month.

PSP 2

Rumoured for ages, but only just starting to come together, Sony showing off a new hardware might smart with those of us that splashed out £225 on a PSPgo but will invigorate the handheld market if the new machine is powerful enough to cause a stir.  Expect motion control, touchscreen and plenty of iPhone-like apps in the future.  If it’s true, of course.

HD Remakes

We’ve already had God of War, but we’re also expecting the Team Ico Collection – a bundle of the classic PS2 titles Ico and Shadow of the Colossus; and, hopefully a Sly Cooper remake pack which is apparently also going to be in 3D.  Sony have hinted that they’re interested in lots of these HD remakes, so perhaps we’ll see something tonight in addition to the two above.

The Last Guardian

And sticking with Team Ico – if The Last Guardian doesn’t appear in a newly playable form (complete with release date) we’ll eat our Sony-shaped hats.  The studio’s latest title, one that looks to surpass the previous two games in terms of scope and scale, could very well be the highlight of Sony’s show if it’s present.  Here’s hoping.

Killzone 3

A cert, a lock.  Guerrilla’s new first person shooter will very probably appear first on the roster tonight, setting the tone for the rest of the show.  Very few people have seen the game up close and personal so we’re desperately crossing our fingers in the hope that we’ll get an extended playtest live on stage.  And possibly even a little bit of multiplayer.

LittleBigPlanet 2, Motorstorm: Apocalypse, inFamous 2

The ‘other’ big games we already know about will surely be there in force, and tonight will be the first chance anyone gets to see inFamous 2 in action, if indeed it’s there.  Sackboy’s latest is a lock too, almost definitely, and we’ve already confirmed that the same level of Motorstorm we’ve played will be there for everyone to enjoy.  Games like this will set Sony’s show apart from Microsoft’s if they focus on them.

Move

But then there’s Move.  I’m not a big fan, personally, of motion control but if Sony can show us that the tech can be backed up with quality gaming then I’m in.  However, if they concentrate a big portion of the conference on throwaway casual titles then I’ll be up all night ranting about ‘loss of focus’ and moaning like never before.  Move can be great, but don’t over do it.

3D

I don’t know how Sony plan to show off the 3D tech to the journalists present unless they can come up with some massive screen and a big bucket of 3D glasses.  Sure, games will be ‘on the show floor’ in 3D for the public to experience, but as for the expo conference tonight?  I’m sure we’ll hear about it, but probably won’t be seeing much of it.

Surprises

And then there’s the surprises.  The exclusives and the exclusive steals, the stuff that makes E3 the biggest show on Earth for the gaming world.  I honestly don’t have any ideas what might make up this portion, but I’m hoping for big things from big players in the industry.  Sony’s first party studios can deliver, but I’m expecting a few third party treats too.

Here’s to 8pm tonight, then…

  1. mass effect 3?

    • That is a good point actually. Neither Microsoft nor EA announced it in their press conferences and it is definitely an announcement worthy of a press conference. Perhaps Sony is getting revenge for FF XIII.

      • that’s exactly what I was thinking

  2. Didn’t EA show Crysis 2 in 3D last night at their press conference? If EA can do it I’m sure Sony can too.

Realy looking forward to tonight, has to be better than Portugal v Ivory Coast which is nearly as bad as the MS press conference last night.

    • Yep. There were 3D glasses for everyone in the audience.

      • I hear the crowd there enjoy casual games.

  3. New GTA to have exclusive DLC for PS3
    Also a new GTA

    • I think there’s more chance of Manhunt 3 than GTA tonight.

      • Why would R* even consider releasing a Manhunt 3 if they know it will be banned

      • Publicity. Rockstar aren’t even at E3 so I’d be suprised if a GTA game was announced without them there.

  4. Surprises! :)

  5. i predict sony will put on a better show than ms, and in another demonstration of my precognitive talent i predict tomorrow will be a wednesday. :)
why is wednesday spelled that way when it’s pronounced wensday? when was the d dropped?

    • for those few people left in the world that speak the Queen’s Englidh, I am sure there is still a ‘d’ pronounced

      • “the Queen’s Englidh” Hahaha! :-)

To be fair, I know people from most walks of life. From working class to multi-millionaire upper class. From babies to CEOs. Not one of them (especially the gurgling babies) say Wed-nes-day.

There’s a natural (and slow) evolution of the English language and it’s usually not too jarring. Like the accepted use of altogether instead of all together, etc. More importantly, when did people think it was okay to spell the word “definitely” as “definately”? Scum! :-)

      • How about ’til, the abbreviation of until, suddenly being spelled till by everyone? That one really does my nut. As do completely inappropriate uses of the words fail and epic. Both totally bug me, more than you can imagine.

      • I’m right with you on the FAIL & EPIC thing. How the hell did they become popular anyway. Irritates me so much, I’m getting angry just writing this :p

    • I think it comes from Woden’s Day or some Norse god like that

      • which is my oblique way of guessing there will be a GOW3 surprise this evening.

      • Yup, Woden as in Odin… like Thursday is for Thor.

    • I don’t think it’s been ‘dropped’ it’s just people can’t tlk ri8!
Slang, is not a gud ting at all.

  6. I watched the Microsoft, EA and Ubisoft conferences yesturday and was shocked by what I saw in the Microsoft and Ubisoft conferences. The presenter of the Ubisoft conference was just damn annoying, couldn’t string a sentence together properly. Microsoft’s conference was very boring, too much time spent on Kinect and not enough time spent on their main games (Gears of War 3, Halo) EA’s conference I thought was pretty damn good and the best I’ve seen so far. I think Sony will “win” this E3 aslong as they don’t spend too long on Move and 3D. Show the games and reveal the new PSN service. I won’t be missing the Sony conference so roll on 8pm!

    • wow, way to repeat all of the stories on here today!

    • Well, if sony spends too much time on Move’s casual games (most of them i bet) Nintendo could take the first place with “bombs” like DS3 and Zelda.

  7. I think Dead Space2 will have something special for ps3 players.

  8. The new 250gb and 500gb PS3 will surely be there, and, with this increased storage capacity (and the gamers clear interest in PS2 remake games) it might not be crazy to imagine a new section in the PSN to download PS2 games.

    • A san andreas download title.Yes Please!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. Interested in more info about PSN+ and Move (prices mainly!). The only game that im interested in is LBP2. I hope they dont go on about KZ3, The Last Guardian and 3D Gaming too much, otherwise I just stop watching.

    • why they are awesome titles especially KZ3

      • IMO, theyre boring. I rate KZ2 on the same level I rate Terminator Salvation.

      • I do hope that is the last time I see KZ2 in the same sentence as that heap of s**t

  10. Is it too much to hope Arkham Asylum 2 will make an appearance? The first one had PS3 exclusive DLC so maybe they will do the same for the sequel. A Dead Space 2 exclusive looks likely as EA said that we’ll be seeing more of that game at the Sony conference.

    • Arkham Asylum 2 is in the line up yes. I saw it on a website..Gamespot I think. KZ3, infamous 2, LBP2, GT5 all on thursday as well.
