Remember the ‘big announcement’ that was hinted at yesterday? Well Visceral Games has let the cat out of the bag – say hello to ‘Dead Space: Ignition’.
Coming to PSN/XBL towards the latter half of the year, Dead Space: Ignition takes place on ‘The Sprawl’ mere hours before Isaac Clarke turns up to kick off Dead Space 2. As always, survival is the name of the game as a Necromorph outbreak has occurred
The most interesting part of the press release reads as follows;
Dead Space Ignition combines an interactive comic-style story with three unique hacking mini games; Hardware Crack, Trace Route and System Override. Each game offers a fun and satisfying arcade experience that will challenge players with puzzles and twitch gameplay. Dead Space Ignition features a unique “Choose Your Own Adventure” type narrative, allowing players to survive the horrific Necromorph outbreak in multiple ways. The game offers four unique endings and upon completion of each one, players will be rewarded with unlocks including an exclusive suit, all of which can be used by Isaac Clarke in Dead Space 2 when the game releases on Jan 25, 2011.
Dead Space Ignition is written by Antony Johnston, the award-winning, New York Times bestselling author of comics, graphic novels, video games and books including Wasteland, and Daredevil. Antony makes his return to the Dead Space universe after creating the six-book Dead Space comic series in 2008. In Dead Space Ignition, Antony uses his horror story-telling expertise to introduce new characters and craft new plot twists for this intriguing prequel.”
Whilst the phrase ‘mini games’ hardly sets our souls aflame, if it is done to a high standard and priced attractively then we can see this selling fairly well – especially with exclusive Dead Space 2 unlockables.
It is interesting to note that Dead Space: Ignition is but one of many things Visceral Games has planned in the build up to Dead Space 2.

Interesting concept, so it’s a game in it’s own right that is cashing in on the name of a franchise, whilst also serving as a hype builder to the main game, containing DLC that you’re essentially buying for a game you don’t yet own but will make you more likely to want the game, and giving them a Dead Space presence in the Christmas lineup to make up for the fact they have slipped to 2011…
I can see this taking off, it could be the next evolution of DLC, DLC you buy before the game is released! Although it sounds like a different game genre on this occasion, I could also imagine devs releasing PSN/XBL games based on the mechanics of the main game by way of a paid-for demo but not a demo because it’s a game in it’s own right. It gives you a taster of the gameplay and ends on a cliffhanger to make you want the full game (a bit like R&C Quest of Booty but in reverse)…

I’m a sucker for these things, and I’ve bought worse from PSN – so I’ll be getting this one. Though I was dreaming it would have been a multiplayer beta, oh well.

Great stuff, was really impressed by the solidity of vision with Dead Space and am very pleased to see more canon.

Yay! I called it! I’ll probably be buying into this, no matter what. Dead Space is really compelling to play.
