Something’s cooking down south Grand Theft Auto related. Of course, this could be nothing (the “guess-what-a-rating-means” game a notoriously sketchy practice), but Australia’s infamously prudish classification board are re-rating Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.
As Kotaku correctly states, despite the aforementioned reluctance of Australia to embrace adult games, Vice City is already available Down Under, so it’s not like this is just an old game finally seeing the light of Australia’s searing sun. Also note how the version is referred to as “Modified.”
With GTAV surely in development in some deep, furtive Rockstar lair, it’s not outlandish to think that last-generation GTA games could find themselves on the likes of the PSN or XBL on the run up to an eventual release of a new title as a way of driving up interest. (Like it needed it.) Could this also be a HDing of GTA’s seminal neon-bathed outing?
As already mentioned, this could be a whole load of hooey. It does give you the opportunity to argue over which game was the best in the GTA series so far, however. Off you go.

UPDATE: Rumour smash! Rockstar have confirmed to VG247 that this classification is simply to do with PC back-catalog shenanigans. Stand down, people.

No need to argue. Vice City was the best by a mile.

I second that.

I don’t…Vice City was flat and dull, GTA 3 all the way :)

It’s all subjective. I liked San Andreas the best. that game was HUGE. There’s something about jumping from a plane at 5000 ft into a shallow swimming pool that gets the heart pumping, or riding a bike off the top of a mountain and taking 45 seconds to hit the ground. I think they’ve all been great games I just thought SA offered a lot more to do and see.

Fourthed, just commented on this in the forum thread a minute ago.

There was only ever one secret package I could never find in the game, and it was the only GTA that I have ever tried to find them all, so I better look a little harder for it to get that Silver/Gold trophy lol.
lewis815
I hope this is true, it will be great to play some more spruced up PS2 games. (And of course I won’t say no to the trophy support ;))
skibadee
love them all.
skibadee
this would sell like hot cakes if it has HD & trophy support fingers crossed.

Overall Vice City was the best GTA of last generation in terms of feel and definitely the radio soundtracks. Although SA was more fun in my opinion as there was so much more to do.
Kovacs
A friend of mine summed up SA perfectly in my opinion: “Everything was going fine until I had to teach that fat fool to swim. Never went back to it after that.”

I never had a problem with the training stuff. It was a cool way to learn various fighting styles and I found that just running around and buying burgers for health was enough to get exercise.

San andreas had vision beyond what the PS2 could achieve and suffered awfully because of it. Huge, bland, turd brown expanses of low poly terrain with hardly a vehicle in sight coupled with the bloody swimming did for me. Everything in cities was great, but stray beyond their outskirts and it all went wrong.
Plus the plot was stupid “oh you’re gonna frame me for murdering a cop are you? I think I may add one or two to that tally before I’m done”.

i liked SA, but VC was the best due to the fact you bought out buildings then ran your illigal spin on each one. The drug dealing ice cream company, the printers that printed money, all good fun :)
DrNate86
Vice City was definitely the most fun, but I thought the radio was genius in the GTAIII, Lazlow and the crazy man who “descends from the rafters…like a bat!” still makes me laugh today.

Me too. I have the whole station as an MP3 and occasionally throw it on for long road trips. It’s like listening to a real, hilarious, radio station

O.M.G. I would snap this up in a second. GTA: Vice City is easily the best GTA to date. It was so good, unbelievable. I would love a HD version of this. Or even just a standard re-release. That would be incredible.

Great game but if it’s not pimped up into HD and with trophies and multiplayer, I dunno if I will want to get into it again. I played it on PS2 and PC so much I don’t think I would want to pay out for the same experience again
Kevling
If it’s a PSN HD version, why does it say Multiplatform?
It might actually be a GTAIV Vice City, just like they did with III…
jikomanzoku
Now there’s an enticing prospect :)
iAvernus
That’ll be cool. A throw back to Liberty City. I would buy it.
icuyesido
It was a great game but I preferred GTA:SA, the story in Vice may have been better but the sheer amount of things to do in SA made it so even after the story I found myself playing it again and again, meaning that SA was better value and more fun.
carson321
I believe modified refers to the fact that the game was edited to reeduce the amount of violence and blood etc in it in order for it to get the australian release, so I sincerley doubt this is anything new

It’s the publisher who filed the application, Rockstar Games, so USA is correct.

Publisher: Rockstar Games – based in the US
The publisher submits the game to the rating board, not the developer.
