It’s no secret that Guillermo del Toro, director of great films like Pan’s Labyrinth, is a big fan of games, having spoken in the past particularly of his love for Flower and Shadow of the Colossus. However, the announcement that he is moving into making games himself may well come as a bit of a surprise.
Having left the new upcoming Hobbit movie project following studio stalling, it looks like del Toro is focusing on the more interactive side of things. He revealed the news in an interview with MTV, saying that the games will be made by his own team – in his words: “It’s not a development deal. We’re going to do it. We’re doing them.”
“Them”? Oh yeah, turns out it’s more than one game that del Toro is working on, and it looks like his love for artistic games with strong stories is likely to show through to his own projects too: “We’re going to do games that are going to be technically and narratively very interesting.”
Luckily, we won’t be having to wait too long to find out what exactly it is that del Toro is working on, or who it is that he’s collaborating with. “One of the things we’re announcing in the next few weeks is a big deal with a big company,” he says in the interview.
There are no real clues as to what he could be working on, but whilst he is now not directing the new Hobbit movie, he is still helping out on the writing side, so at least one of his game projects could be related to that.
Or, as MTV Multiplayer points out, the reveal of Irrational Games’ new title is in “the next few weeks”, but that is likely just coincidence. At least we only have to wait a couple of weeks to find out what del Toro will be bringing to the gaming world.

Will be interesting to see if he does like Spielberg and make some puzzle-game for Wii.
