360 Supported Until 2015

Microsoft’s Vice President for Interactive Entertainment, Chris Lewis, has said that that the current Xbox 360 will recieve support until 2015 as Kinect will extend the lifespan of the console.

“Kinect really gives us, I think, a very genuine additional five years. What Kinect does is broaden us out to users that we weren’t addressing in the past,” he said.

However Microsoft are less enthusiastic about 3D gaming suggesting it will become popular at some point – but not just yet.

“We are two to three years away from that, ’til the price point comes down, ’til the experience is sufficiently social, that you don’t sit there with big glasses on and don’t talk to your family.”

As for the Xbox 720 (or whatever it will be called) the news that the 360 will be supported for another five years does not rule out a new console but Microsoft are “not fixated on that right now”.

  1. Their optimism over Kinect never ceases to amaze me.

  2. “’til the experience is sufficiently social, that you don’t sit there with big glasses on and don’t talk to your family.”

If anyone tries to be sociable while I’m trying to watch a movie (whether it’s 3D or not) they can get the hell out of my social group…

  3. I think Sony and Microsoft are both in for a rude awakening when the sales figures for Kinect-i-Move start rolling in. IMHO, they have created a solution that is looking for a problem. Social gamers already have the Wii.

  4. they’re certainly confident in kinect, publicly at least, maybe they’re actually concerned internally, what with the largely negative public reaction, at least i would hope so because if they think kinect is going to have it as easy as they’re implying then i reckon they’re in for a big shock.

and i don’t know if ms would still support the 360 after launching a new xbox, they killed of the xbox 1 when 360 launched, and pretty much abandoned the pc at the same time.

  5. So basically, regarding 3D, Microsoft will continue with their business model of watching Sony develop the tech and then attempt to cash in later claiming their version is ground breaking and revolutionary.

I’ll put a fiver on MS eating their words about wearing glasses within two years.

  6. Sounds good for Kinect people

  7. It’s all right it’s all ready a last gen console! :) But supporting a console for a loner period is good as long as devs can keep on getting the best out of it, if they get to the limit of the machine then that should be the end of the life of it.
