PS3 Continues To Sell Well, Passes Wii In Japan

Just as the PlayStation 3 enters the market with its own motion control device, so it passes the originator of the casual friendly format in its native terrority.  Yes, the PlayStation 3 has finally outsold the Wii for sales in 2010, showing impressive figures backed up by exciting new hardware and some killer exclusives.

It’s not a huge margin, mind, and it could indeed reverse back as we approach Christmas, but from the beginning of the year until September 12th, Japanese sales aggregator Media Create has confirmed that the PS3 has sold 1,017,094 units whilst the Wii has shifted 1,015,513.

Such strong sales have been attributed to the likes of Final Fantasy XIII, not available on the Wii, although we’re not quite sure what happened with Super Mario Galaxy 2, one of my favourite videogames this year.  It’s also worth mentioning that the DS continues to sell far more than any other machine, shifting 1,637,461, although the PSP is close behind, with 1,453,248.

Figures for the last week are also encouraging for Sony, though, suggesting it’s not necessarily limited to sales over the year.  The PS3 has sold 19,907 against the Wii’s 15,031, with the Xbox 360 continuing to lag behind with just 2,915 units.

  1. I think the Japanese prefer their own consoles over the American Xbox360, same with me, as I only have the Xbox to play their exclusives

    • Yea, just like the US loves the 360, its a pride thing i guess. Its good to see the PS3 out selling the wii, but in all fairness, its going to happen world wide as i cant imagine many people not having a wii by now?!?! nintendo cant sell millions to the billions of people that already own a wii… Maybe time to announce wii2 at E3?

      • We need a British console! Actually, that’d be made of wood and cogs and steam. I changed my mind.

      • dont forget the duct tape and wedges of cardboard

      • The world is held together with duct tape

      • We make some brilliant games here in england though!

      • If a British console was made it would always stop every half hour for tea.

  2. Good news for the PS3 and the new Move hardware/software. It would be interesting to see a breakdown of PSP sales into PSP 3000 and PSP Go, to see which model was selling more units.

    • PSP Go is tanking badly in Japan. Sells less than Xbox 360 from all the figures I’ve seen.

      • It sells less than hens teeth from the last figures I saw, it must be closeto one of the biggest flops of all time, its funny how Sony still try it spin it as a success

      • Sounds like a wise move would be to sell/trade the PSP Go in the run up to Xmas whils’t it could fetch a decent price, and probably have enough money from the deal to buy a PSP 3000 with some games.

  3. Great News for the Playstations….!!

  4. It’s amazing the Wii has held its price so long and still generally maintained top notch sales, wonder what would happen if it was cut from £169.99 to £119.99

They must be making shit loads off every unit and have done so for years

    • Profitable from day one, wasn’t it? Although PS3 sales speaks volumes when you think how much more costly it is as a device. It’ll be fascinating to see if Wii sales slip further in 2011 whilst the PS3 will hopefully gather even more pace.

I wonder if Sony might drop the RRP to £220 or so come the New Year. Hope so.

  5. It’s amazing that back in 2007 when Sony said that 2009 and 2010 would dee them dominant sellers in the market, everyone laughed, but hey it’s true! Does Sony have some sort of Oracle working for them or something? I think now that the PS3 has move, it will fast become a big seeler. I mean Move is based on a format of motion control we know works and it offers people who have been introduced to motion gaming or just gaming in general with the Wii a chance to be part of a more hardcore market now. It virtually is the Wii2.

  6. YAY! it feels great when you believe in something and it actually happens!

  7. Well done Sony!! :D

  8. Step one is complete.

  9. Sony FTW! XD
