Valve has recently launched a cinematic trailer for upcoming multiplayer online battle arena, DOTA 2. The original game, titled Defense of the Ancients, began life as a mod for Warcraft III, soon becoming a popular standalone experience which has spawned a colossal dedicated fanbase.
Back in 2009 it was revealed that Valve had picked up one of the game’s designers, IceFrog, to develop a fully fledged sequel titled DOTA 2. The project immediately became a controversial topic; due to the fact that the original game pooled its assets from Warcraft III and if DOTA 2 was to follow a similar path, legal action from Blizzard could ensue.
This escalated even further with the emergence of debut concept art, clearly depicting character and environmental designs almost identical to that of the Warcraft universe.
Though DOTA 2 will no doubt be a big player in MOBA genre, it can’t be ignored that Riot Games’ League of Legends (backed by Steve Feak, also a DOTA co-creator) has already been around for some time and has accumulated a staggering free-to-play following.

I’ve literally just started playing League of Legends, and so far it’s brilliant. However, I’ve only been training against bots, the actual player vs. player stuff could turn me right off.
