WeView: Angry Birds

Yes, my obvious hints at you having a game to be angry about (and telling everyone on Twitter that I’d be picking this game) have lead us to our first mobile title; Angry Birds. Well I say mobile, but that was just the start for Rovio. It may have originated on iOS but you can play it pretty much anywhere now. Got just about any smartphone? Rovio’s got you covered. How about a PSP or PS3? You’re sorted there. Even if you’ve only got a web browser there’s a version for you; in under two years Angry Birds has become almost ubiquitous.

Now normally I’d link you to our review of the game here to tell you about Angry Birds. Sadly, no such review exists; there was one on AppTilt but that sister site has now vanished into the mists. Never fear though, for I have a back up plan that I have dubbed “Operation Ask Alex”. As our resident captain of all things iOS related he seemed the obvious choice to ask about Rovio’s juggernaut. Here’s what he had to say:

People moan about and belittle Angry Birds as if it’s somehow an inferior game to be seen playing. The opposite is true – the game is clearly very simple but through hugely aggressive updating and a certain amount of marketing flair the 2D puzzler has, alongside Doodle Jump, proved that people will buy something that’s addictive and cheap in the millions.

Millions. Yes, it might only make 40p or so per copy sold and there’ll be the publisher to pay out of that, but it shifts more per month than so-called AAA console titles and its move to PSN made it the biggest selling game on the platform. People want Angry Birds, because, above all else, it’s rather brilliant.

Hate it all you want, but you’re massively outnumbered.

He’s right of course, hating Angry Birds does seem to put you in the minority of those who have an opinion on the fowl flinging fun. However, that doesn’t make it invalid as an opinion and if you can’t stand it then here’s your chance to air your opinion. Of course if you love it then it’s still your chance to put out your thoughts on the game, that’s the whole point.

So if you feel like taking part just head over to the forums and leave us your thoughts on the game. Whilst I’m not going to discount longer reviews, please remember that the aim is for short, snappy opinions. More than that I simply don’t have the time to wade through longer reviews, so if you want to have your opinion included in the verdict post try to keep it short.

Once you’ve written your review make sure you give it a score on the Buy ItBargain Bin ItRent ItAvoid It scale. Remember, if you want your score and opinion included in Monday’s verdict post you need to have it done by Sunday afternoon, otherwise I’ll have written it and you’ll be left out in the cold.

  1. Given that it’s free on Android, and one cannot rent it, presumably this comes down to ‘Avoid It’?

I think you need a new category of “Download It” for those people using *proper* smartphones.

    • I guess you could rent it by purchasing an iPod/iPad, and then abusing Apple’s 14 day return policy, and play the game.

    • Or play it for a while and deleting it.
You could call that a rental.

    • Proper smart phones?

    • As much as I dislike the iPhone and Apple in general, and that way everything trying to sound cool has a frigging ‘i-‘ in front of…ahem, nevermind. What I was going to say is you might want to tone down the elitist talk, makes you sound kinda snooty

      • Sorry, was a rather half-hearted trolly comment! And actually, I tend to speak like that in real life, so I guess it just bleeds through.

        I haz no friends.

  2. I guess i won’t be doing a review that is over 9000 pages longs then.

I have heard some excellent things about angry birds. I just wish they would stop crapping on my window. :op

    • A Blackbird singing sweetly,
      awoke me from my bed.
      I tiptoed to the window..
      .. and smashed the fecker’s head! ;)

  3. I tried the ipod demo but it was only when i played the ps3 mini that i started to enjoy it. It definitely has that ‘one more go’ factor, although it’s still a game i would only dip into occasionally.

    • Same here. Played the demo on someone’s Iphone, and purchased the mini on my PS3. Wonderful little game that I play if I have a spare 15 minutes to kill, but tend to then over-run due to “let’s try that again”. Easy to pick up, but a bugger to put down!

  4. Can’t wait for Angry Birds VS Worms… that will change gaming forever..

Played it for a bit, was ok

  5. currently playing this now lol

  6. love abgry birds I am a firm fan of the new rio edition ( i say new its been out for a bit) very addictive and brilliant for filling some of the more boring hours at work.

  7. Great game IMO. I’m guessing that this will definately split the community.

  8. great game, Buy It, at best on a phone. Prefer Plants vs Zombies though.

  9. Most played game on my iPod :) for 60p it’s a must have on the iPod/iPhone :) Will post my thoughts in the forum later

  10. Angry Birds is a great game and it’s very strange to see what appears to be disproportional hate/dislike for it. I just put it down to personal differences. Shame people can’t see that it’s still a great game but it might just not be for them.
