UPDATED: Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer Outed?

“That’s right – Mass Effect 3 is getting multiplayer” proclaims PC Powerplay, running with the story on the front cover of issue 197. The rumours of Mass Effect multiplayer have been doing the rounds for ages now, but it looks like it’s actually happening if the mag is to be believed.

“We travel to BioWare’s office in Edmonton for hands-on time with the series’ first foray into online gameplay, and chat with Mass Effect Series Producer and Mass Effect 3 Project Director Casey Hudson about the decision to go multiplayer in the epic battle for the galaxy.”

Hopefully an official announcement will be coming soon, but until then this is still down as a rumour.

Updated: multiplayer has been confirmed by BioWare. We will have to wait until October 18th for more information.

  1. NO! NO! NOOOOOOOOOOOO! If true that is.
Mass Effect doesn’t need Multiplayer as the main story alone tends to take up 30+hours. I can’t see MP for ME working due to the nature of the gameplay. To make it fair they would have to strip out the powers and turn it into a generic MP shooter.

I really hope it’s a rumour. If this was the reason why ME3 was delayed, i won’t be happy actually i will be happy that it was delayed but annoyed that it was delayed for MP.

    • Never liked Mass Effect cause of the gameplay… lol maybe Co-op would be great.

    • it could be like borderlands where you just join up with someone to complete the story and your level remains the same. i dunno though.

      • Yes please!

      • If they do it like Borderlands it could mess up the main story

  2. Seems a bit superfluous, but I guess we will just have to see. If it’s competitive multiplayer they will have to do something about the combat however, because – being succinct – it’s shit.

Hopefully they found a way to implement co-op, now that would be awesome.

  3. Hell, I won’t complain if the story is legit. Though it could easily be a co-op spin-off mode, I would love to see Bioware build a unique cover-based competitive experience.

  4. The problem is, assuming things are similar to ME2 of course, the actual gameplay in ME is very below par. Where it excels is its awesome storytelling and sense of exploration. Adding a multiplayer that will almost definately focus solely on the game’s shooting controls just seems a bit daft

  5. This news is bumming me out. The whole reason i like ME is because it’s a wonderfully immersive SP experience. How much development time and resources have been spent on this MP nonsense – unless it’s a seperate downloadable add-on then i have to pay for that MP development when i buy the game, which stinks.

  6. Sounds fun. The small amount of ME I’ve played makes me think that the combat would be awful in a Vs TDM CTF style game, but if they could make something new and unique then it might be interesting..

  7. It’ll probably be Co Op. I can’t really see a TDM style multiplayer component coming from this.

  8. It didn’t do Uncharted any harm, I’d expect Mass Effect’s multiplayer to follow the same sort of structure.

  9. I don’t really think Mass Effect needs competitive multiplayer. How you could make competitive multiplayer work anyway for ME? Seems pretty pointless. On the other hand, I would welcome the likes of 3 player coop. Only if I could go as Garrus though.

  10. Well you don’t have to actually play the multiplayer you know people.

    • That would be fine but you still have to pay for it.

      • They don’t up the price though so you are not paying extra, games that don’t have MP are not cheaper.
