PSN Game Sharing Being Cut From 5 To 2

Sony are limiting the number of different PS3s you’ll be able to share your PSN purchases with from five to two from the middle of this month.

According to a report on AndriaSang, the cut-off date is the 18th of November, after which any purchases will be limited to just the console it was downloaded on, and one other.

This isn’t retroactive – any games downloaded before that date will still be shareable between five machines.

The limit is an issue when you take into account that the console total includes PSP, PSP go, Vita and the PS3.  If you download a Minis title after the 18th, for example, it’ll be playable on your PS3 and PSP, but not your Vita unless you deactivate an account.

Deactivation will be easier, however, Sony will be offering up the option online, rather than via the console.

The reasons for doing this are apparently a balance between “consumer convenience” and “content creator copyright protection.”

Update: Sony have confirmed this on their blog.  However, it’s 2 PS3 consoles, and 2 PSP consoles, not combined.

  1. I’m not sure where the mix up is here, but you are currently allowed 5 PS3s and 5 PSPs, not 5 altogether. So, it would make sense that the limit would go down from 5 each to 2 each, meaning you could still have two registered PS3s, a PSP and Vita (assuming Vita comes under PSP and not its own slot).

    • You are right, let’s hope so for the PSP/Vita owners.

    • It’s 2ps3s and 2 psps

  2. Although it won’t effect me I can see a lot of folk will not be too happy about this.

  3. I was about to rant (due to broken PS3s and what not) but the online deactivation thing means this shouldnt be a problem for me, as long as I can deactivate my old or dead PS3s.

  4. Balls. My account is maxed at the moment :/

    • Is this then not good for you? You can deactivate those online you do not use or do you use your games on FIVE different machines?

    • The UPDATE is super news! Please ignore many of my previous comments!! :)

  5. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  6. Oh god LoL Another new month & another new thing for internet people to ‘moan’ about. You have to laugh[as i am doing now] :-D

  7. Any thoughts on how the online deactivation would work? Would you have to have registered the console online in the first place?

    • It shouldn’t be necessary, they should have the info in their system, so you can see on what systems a game has been activated on.

    • Hopefully you just need your PSN details (username and password) .. anything more and people might struggle to deactivate dead or consoles activated elsewhere.

  8. So finally they’ve cracked it, maybe those who have shared their account/password details should change their password and deactivate any consoles they have given their details to.

  9. So, I have my content shared with my brother and a close friend. If i deactivate my friend’s my account from my friend’s ps3 online, the next time he trys to play the content, he won’t wont be able to. Is this correct?

    • Yes. Although some might still work, I think DLC sometimes works differently to full games downloaded.

  10. just wondering but wat happens if you dont deactivate accounts but buy new content does soney just choose where the content goes between other account or wat? also on a second note. ive lost an account due to gamesharing(yes i know its stupid.) but because im the account creator would i get it back even i dont have password an email for it?

    • Without a password and an email address to log in to it? No, of course not. You’d need that to log in online, and without that there’d be no way of cutting off other consoles etc.
