Edge is usually a source that steers clear of groundless conjecture. So, perhaps the rumours they’re publishing today should be treated with a little more respect than others we’ve seen floating around? Perhaps not. We’ll let you decide.
Apparently, Ubisoft Montreal is already working on projects relating to target hardware for the next Xbox. Apparently, the hardware is PC-based but built using off-the-shelf hardware supplied by Microsoft to roughly meet expected specifications. Finalised developer hardware is supposedly expected before Christmas with retail-ready hardware in the shops by next Christmas.
Edge is also claiming to know of at least one Sony-owned studio that is working entirely on next generation hardware projects. That same studio has apparently had some input into the graphics technology adopted by Sony.
Of course, until the platform holders themselves speak up about their plans, none of this should be counted on to be true. Speculation does seem to be gathering pace for an E3 2012 reveal though.
Both Sony and Microsoft will be acutely aware of the importance of getting to market early, with Microsoft’s jump on the PS3 giving them a big head start. Both companies will also be keen on the idea of stealing any potential thunder that the Wii U might be due when it starts showing seriously through the expo season next summer.
These are very definitely still rumours and conjecture at this stage but it’s all getting much easier to believe.
I think I’m ready for some new hardware, are you?

“I think I’m ready for some new hardware, are you?”
Definitely not.
But for its own sake, the PS4 better be natively compatible with the PS3. Besides, I don’t see Sony not capitalizing on the Cell architecture.
Kennykazey
I’m with you on that, on all fields. If it can’t play PS3 games, heads will roll.

With the current market for ‘HD re-releases’picking up, I think backwards compatibility is on it’s way out. As much as I’d like the PS4 to play PS3 games, I also want it to play PS2 and PS1 games. There comes a point when it becomes silly, I feel, and the HD rerelease trend is a happy medium.
KeRaSh
I thought they confirmed that they would move away from complicated hardware like the cell so backwards compatibility could only be achieved through emulation, which I think wouldn’t be possible, even with the power of a PS4.

Another question is whether some form of Kinect 2 is bundled, would be a huge advantage if every single unit in the install-base had access to the complimentary control scheme, although cost would be a huge factor.
Burgess_101
i was just thinking that surely with the Kinect released to late in the cycle its a bit of a waste of dev. time that they could have used to be with the next xbox ?
Burgess_101
so not to…

I can guess two titles for the next Xbox, Halo and Gears -_-
The PS4 needs to have high hardware with at least 4GB Ram and a 1GB GPU. Also both companies better not use solder, just use screws and a backplate!!!!!

In all honesty, I really don’t care at the moment, with the current climate, I like many others, cannot afford to drop my investment on my current hardware & software. Maybe in a year or 2?

“Edge is also claiming to know of at least one Sony-owned studio that is working entirely on next generation hardware projects.” Naughty Dog perhaps? Uncharted 4 would be one hell of a launch title for the PS4.
BTW my 11 year old says he knows for a fact that the PS4 with have holograms :-)
Kennykazey
I think Guerilla Games is more likely.

I can see the neXtbox coming out around Xmas neXt year. (See what I did there?) But the PS4 will probably be out sometime in 2013 so it doesn’t fight the PSV in it’s first year. I however can see Sony do some good cheap bundles next holiday to fight the coming ‘box.
Boomshanks
My assumption, maybe an Xbox 361 in 2013?
TSBonyman
It’ll be called the ‘Kinexbox.. ;)

I don’t understand this attitude of ‘Sony wouldn’t release the PS4 next year and have it go head to head with the PSV’. It’s an illogical point, for me personally, for two reasons. Firstly, the markets for the PSV and the PS4 would be different ones, wouldn’t they? Secondly, keeping up with the competition is more important than worrying about internal competition. People who would buy a PSV and/or a PS4 will still buy them regardless of release date.

The problem is that SCE seems to have a problem with implementing two stratgies at the same time and the end result is that one of them fails.
KeRaSh
I agree. The Vita has it’s own holiday season of sales in Japan and will be out early 2013 for the rest of the world so it will have almost a whole year of it’s own before the PS4 would release, if it came out around the holiday season of 2013.

Next gen can wait a few more years as some of us have yet to get certain releases from last year and this year. ;)
If the PS4 and neXtbox uses 3D, i will refuse to get it as i depise it. I would say that both consoles have still got some life left in them. Skyrim has shown us what the current consoles are capable of producing. :)
