Edge is usually a source that steers clear of groundless conjecture. So, perhaps the rumours they’re publishing today should be treated with a little more respect than others we’ve seen floating around? Perhaps not. We’ll let you decide.
Apparently, Ubisoft Montreal is already working on projects relating to target hardware for the next Xbox. Apparently, the hardware is PC-based but built using off-the-shelf hardware supplied by Microsoft to roughly meet expected specifications. Finalised developer hardware is supposedly expected before Christmas with retail-ready hardware in the shops by next Christmas.
Edge is also claiming to know of at least one Sony-owned studio that is working entirely on next generation hardware projects. That same studio has apparently had some input into the graphics technology adopted by Sony.
Of course, until the platform holders themselves speak up about their plans, none of this should be counted on to be true. Speculation does seem to be gathering pace for an E3 2012 reveal though.
Both Sony and Microsoft will be acutely aware of the importance of getting to market early, with Microsoft’s jump on the PS3 giving them a big head start. Both companies will also be keen on the idea of stealing any potential thunder that the Wii U might be due when it starts showing seriously through the expo season next summer.
These are very definitely still rumours and conjecture at this stage but it’s all getting much easier to believe.
I think I’m ready for some new hardware, are you?

I hope PS4 is simply mindblowing tech with my profile just hopping across. Someone already said it but with each platform having an online personalised identity if you will, its kind of already decided which way peeps will go….

As consumers dont we want these nxt gen consoles to come in pretty close time frames so the manufacturers have to at least compete with the cost of the console and not sticking a hefty price tag on it?
rossthebassist
oh well everyones throwing in there 2 cents so i may aswell have my say.
I think SONY will be on the right track with the next console lets call it PS4 for arguments sake.
look at the vita, it runs game engines designed for PS3! sony relise now that they have the ability to create platforms that developers can really get down and dirty with to make the best games possible.
XBOX 360 in my opinion has reached its limits and unfortunatly that means PS3 development suffers from a cross platform point of view, PS3 has reached its limit to how close the PSN can match the console because the launch console just wasnt designed with party chat and other features in mind. all these features are in the VITA which tells me quite simply that when we look at the features in the vita, we are looking at what a PS4 will be like.
maybe the PS4 will simply be a PS3 with a faster cell a larger graphics card and more ram. somthing so simple to let developers keep using current creation tools.

Bring on the PS4 I say, and charge whatever you have to. Provided it’s both beastly and reliable then I’m sold.

I really hope they release new consoles during the holiday season of 2013. I’m certainly ready for it. I love my PS3 and it won’t be going anywhere but I’m just curious as to what is possible from a technical point of view. The PS3 is reaching the limit with first party exclusives. Third party devs still have some optimizing options to squeeze their engines a little more but the limiting factor is the RAM and an easier to code for CPU wouldn’t hurt either. Price wise I’d love to see a max price Tag of 400€ but even a 500€ tag would be acceptable if you compare it to other products like tablets. People certainly don’t have a problem spending that much or more money on a device which does less than what the PS4 could do and are happy with it. Slightly different markets, I know, but the recession can’t be that bad when people happily spend that much money on non life essential gadgets to play around with.

I believe if Sony release the PS4 too early, then it could signal an early death for the PS3. I can’t see it having the same shelf life like the PS2 did.
And no matter what they do I think MS will still dominate with the lead they have built.
For a start the launch price, PS3’s at the moment are around the sweet mark, but still a little pricey for todays market. And Sony would have to aim for the £300-£350 mark, anything other than that would be a dissaster and just to expensive. The xbox price at the moment is at that throwaway tek price.
And I can’t see people trading in PS3’s for the new one without knowing exactly what it can and will do. For example backwards compatability, trophy card carry over, psn downloads being transferrable, etc… These small things could be big issues for people and knowing Sony there’s no guarantee they will get it right. But xbox owners will probably be the otherway round, they’re used to it with the failure rate and MS will probably make the transistion easy.
But once the PS4 has made it’s impact and has the correct price, more people will buy that over the PS3, I can’t see there being too much difference between the two, and with the prices probably being similar, buyers will opt for the PS4 – dropping the PS3 to an early death.
Unless Sony surprise us with some major changes and tweaks to the system so that it is radically different to the PS3 I can’t see a fast uptake. And will a major overhaul alienate Sony fanboys? Again I think it will until it is know what the PS4 can do.
Whereas anything MS bring out will be a major overhaul of what the current generation xbox can do and gamers will lap it up. Granted there won’t be a major leap graphically (for either console) but the useability & functionality of MS console will be impressive and a major improvement of what the 360 can do today. Multi disk games is got to be out of the question. I just don’t know what format they will go for, HD DVD died so I don’t think they would risk a new format, can they use BD Disks? Or will they go the route of a digital download only console?
I know in my head that I won’t be able to afford a new console, even if it is over a year away, and I don’t think many will be able too. But my heart will want me to buy whatever Sony release when it comes!!!

Noooooo! am i the only one on here that’s happy with the current gen of consoles? The PS3 still has a lot of life in it yet and i for one, don’t want to shell out any more cash on a new console. If they did release a new Playstation (possibly PS4) then it would have to be 100% backwards compatible with my PS3 games to make me buy one….and none of that “check the game box code for compatability stuff that we had with the 60gig PS3 either”,,,100% compatible—-will they do that? probably not ;(
