WeView: Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception

Let’s get this out of the way to start with, I didn’t enjoy Uncharted 3 as much as the other Uncharted games. The game’s story telling was strong, but the story itself felt the weakest of the series and whilst it wasn’t actually bad, I just didn’t feel it lived up to its siblings.

Of course, the world would be terribly dull if we all looked at things the same way, and Alex’s view of the game in our review was somewhat stronger. He scored the game at 10/10, and even had some words to say about it. The lengths we go to for our audience are ridiculous. I mean actually writing about a game? Unheard of. Anyway, here’s what he had to say:

There’s no question here: this isn’t just the best Uncharted game Naughty Dog have made, it’s probably the best PlayStation 3 game anyone has made – and I’m not sure what other praise I can offer.  Understand this: I’ve had such an entertaining experience with Drake’s latest epic that I’m actually struggling to think of any sections I didn’t actually like – and because of that it’s something that I’d encourage everyone to play, regardless of what your tastes might be, so refined is the whole package.  A brilliant, brilliant single player, enjoyable co-op and a multiplayer that’ll last for months if not longer.

What’s not to like?

So you’ve heard my thoughts on the game, and those expressed in the review, but now it’s time to tell us what you thought of it. Could you not get enough of Drake’s Deception, or had you had enough by the end? Did it leave you craving more Uncharted, or did you feel like the series could take a break? No matter what your feelings on the game were we want to know. All you need to do to take part is drop a comment below telling us exactly how you felt about Drake’s third PS3 outing.

Once you’ve formed your opinion of the game, you’ll need to finish it off by adding your verdict. Rather than a numeric scale we use the Buy It, Bargain Bin It, Rent It, Avoid It scale in WeView. Just add whatever rating you feel is justified to your opinion of the game and that’s it.

Remember though, if you want your verdict to be included in Monday’s WeView Verdict article you need to have everything done by Sunday evening, otherwise the article will have already been written and you’ll, unfortunately, miss out.

That’s just about all you need to know, get writing!

  1. Easily the worst of the series. The story was rubbish, and nothing “wowed” me like the other games. It just seemed a chore to play through it and I couldn’t wait to finish the campaign. And as someone said in an earlier comment, it just seemed to be pushing you towards the next cinematic sequence. Very dull. And THE most disappointing ending ever to top off a really disappointing game.

    Avoid It.

    • a bit harsh don’t you think lol its still better than most games that got released same month or months after the game was an 8 overall maybe point 5 *cough cough skyrim cough*

      • The multiplayer is quite fun, but the single player was dreadful.

Uncharted 1 will never be beat in terms of story. And that’s the game I had the most fun with. Replayed it loads of times. I can’t bear to put myself through Uncharted 3 again.

  2. Definite BUY IT!

EVERY PS3 owner should own the Uncharted trilogy.
You shouldn’t even need to ask a friend with a PS3 “have you played uncharted?”

  3. Wait, I haven’t done this in a while and it sounds silly, but I write my thoughts in the comments now as opposed to the forum?

    • yes, people found it easier to throw them in comments rather than click through to the forums.

  4. Rather strangely, around these quarters anyway, there seems to be a slightly negative feeling towards Uncharted 3. Whether you felt the story to be inferior than previous titles, or a certain lack of character to proceedings or a dislike to one of the new characters. You could also level the complaint that perhaps it isn’t innovating any more.

All of these complaints I feel are not justified. When reviewing a game, it surely has to be measured against it peers. That does not just include Uncharted 2, but every other third person action/adventure game and putting it simply, Uncharted 3 still blows away all of the competition. I hear that first half of the game has been known to put off even fans of the series, but that is a crying shame. To leave this game unfinished is like leaving a 0-0 football match at half time and then never checking the scores or watching MOTD. For all you know it could have still turned into a 4-3 goal fest. There are parts of Uncharted 3 later on that are simply staggering

I still remember vividly how in awe I was at the part on the airplane (or more to the pint, how Drake exits the plane, without spoiling anything). The game does something that I’ve never seen before. The desert was also nothing short of a monumental achievment in game design. I even enjoyed the horses.

The icing on the cake is the multiplayer and accomplished co-op. By rights this shouldn’t be the case. Other single player games like Assassins or Dead Space have tried to cash in on the popularity of online multiplayer with varying degrees of success. But Uncharted manages it with aplomb and it is something that is massively overlooked when people mention this game. With that, I’m off to pick up Golden Abyss. BUY IT, Yo!

  5. I recently borrowed this off a friend of mine. The reason I hadn’t bought it myself was because I was slightly disappointed by UC2 and wasn’t expecting anything better from the 3rd. However, UC3 is easily one of the best games I have ever played! Everything that (I thought) they had got wrong in the second was improved vastly in the third.

The main area of improvement I noticed was in the combat. It’s now just fluid and extremely satisfying. The shooting mechanics are unchanged but they were fine anyway.

As for the story line, I personally enjoyed it the most out of the trilogy, as I felt I could relate to the characters more and stuff. Overall a brilliant game and definitely deserves its 10/10. Unless you want the platinum (has a couple online trophies so will need an online pass for those), Rent it. The story is definitely worth a play through.

    • Strangest response I’ve seen to a weview- 10/10, brilliant game and only a ‘rent it?’ How could it be improved?

      • Sorry, should have made it a bit clearer. I’ve only played the single player, and unless you are really fussed about the multiplayer (which personally I wasn’t) then a rent is fine, especially just to experience the story once or twice. You could always purchase it after if you love it that much :p

  6. Uncharted 3 is a fantastic game. The story telling is only levelled by Mass Effect, and the graphics are sublime. The gun play is very good; and it is undoubtedly a fantastic game. It is also made by a fantastic developer; a developer so good, they made it 2 studio’s, does that not show how great a game it is?

  7. BUY IT, need I say no more. Didn’t reach the heights of Uncharted 2, but the story was still gripping.

  8. Buy it, it’s excellent. Well worth the money for the set piece filled forward masterpiece single player that it is. My only slight problem with it was it seemed less open and more constrained than uncharted 2. It has it’s own advantages over u2 though as everything gets turned up to 11 and overblown. Which with any action game / too. Blockbuster is a GOOD thing. BUY IT NOW!

  9. I’m a big fan of the series in general, and this one I feel improves on the 2nd game. I did enjoy the second, but in a way the character relationships in this one, and the puzzles too, seemed improved and made for a more enjoyable experience. Strong story telling, set pieces, characters and gameplay provide a fantastic experience. BUY IT

  10. In a word….stunning. Buy buy buy…for its sicker than sick, sicker than a pogo stick….
