What We Played #47

The one that didn’t escape redaction.

My Capital Wasteland adventure finally ended this week. With all the main story quests and the DLC complete my Fallout 3 Blu-ray has been consigned to the shelf probably never to see the insides of my PS3 again.

Not that I had done all there was to be done in DC’s irradiated surrounds or grown tired of all the little vignettes the designers have scattered across them. Indeed there are another couple of dozen locations left unexplored according to the map.

What made me glad to have finally completed all the main and DLC quests was the shear number of crashes I was experiencing towards the end, their frequency growing in lock-step with my save game file. Not to mention the utterly crippling ‘rim-lag. When crashes and lag are making you change the way that you are playing a game it’s time to quit. The fun it hath ceased.

I’ll be spending a while in decontamination before I hit my ultimate edition of Fallout: New Vegas. Other than a little bit of solo shredding on Rock Band 3 (isn’t RB:Blast great news! I loved RB:Unplugged and prequels Amplitude and Frequency) that’s been it for my gaming this week.

This may look like a still image but it's really a video I took of a section where the lag got really bad!
Blair’s been following doctor’s orders and consuming tablet-ised gaming with the addictive medicine coming in Triple Town, Tiny Tower and Angry Birds Space flavours. Away from the various forms of dressed-up finger-painting he’s been hitting the Carnival in the company of MotorStorm RC.

You may have caught Peter soaring across the site’s front page to drop a review of the “slightly underwhelming combat flight sim” Birds of Steel. While not unenjoyable the core dogfighting has not proved compelling enough to tempt him back since the review though thoughts of playing in the mission editor mean a return remains on the cards.

He’s also ruining a virtual walk by playing Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13. At the time of writing he’s not spent a great deal of time with it but says that it seems “a lot like last year’s Tiger Woods game except you’ve got to be more careful throwing the left stick around”. He promises to let us know in the review whether the game is livened up by an alien invasion, orcish rebellion or off-green adultery.

Dan has been playing CENSORED and says that it is CENSORED and CENSORED to play. Which contrasts nicely with Tuffcub’s openness about his failure to play any Killzone 3 this week. The lad must be ill. He has managed a little twin-stick action with hubby Super Stardust Delta though.

Still plugging away at the joys and otherwise that Free-2-Play offers Jim is still free-loading in Wrath of Heroes but suspects it might part him from some pennies before too long. Another F2P title Blacklight: Retribution, the sequel to Tango Down which made little impression, “is free, accessible, and looks great”.

On consoles the only game I’ve had time for is Warriors Orochi 3, the third instalment in KOEI’s cross-over series. Despite having put hundreds of hours into the Warriors franchise, there’s just enough fresh content here to keep me engaged, not to mention the insane roster of over 120 playable characters, each with their own unique weapons and upgrades. If anything, I’m sure a Guinness World Record is in the wings for the team at Omega Force.

After three games and now the revitalised HD collection Aran is no closer to finding out whether Beelzebub will or will not shed a tear. What he can tell us though is that the Devil May Cry HD Collection has been sufficiently fun for him to continue playing even though his review is complete.

He reports that “the fun gameplay is intact and the games are just as good as the first time I played them”. Devil May Cry 3 gets singled out for extra praise with Aran citing it as one of his favourite games of last gen and telling me that it “looks good” following its HD spruce up.

That’s us, so what about you?

Been playing what might be one of the best team play based games this year; Armored Core V.. I haven’t stopped playing. Everything is so satisfying. A huge improvement from AC4.

Been playing Valkyria Chronicles after finally picking up a PS3! I haven’t touched my Xbox since, even though I’ve got Mass Effect 3 to play on it – maybe I’ll leave it until the DLC fixes the ending! Other than that I’ve played some Trine 2, Shift 2 and Motorstorm RC. Can’t believe how good Playstationplus is, really hope that we get some Vita compatible stuff through it as well!

Just got ME3 on Thursday and currently enjoying it although parts of it just feel like a Micheal Bay film, but the good parts. :) Plus, i’m glad that they decided to have a lot of humour in this instead of being 100% serious. My shep is an adept who is very skilled atm due to me importing him.

Plus, EDI is becoming my one of my favorite squadmates due to her humour(so far has resulted in Shep having a rape face). Despite having the biggest mouth about hating ME3’s MP, i tried it yesterday and enjoyed it. :O

Jessica Chobot does a decent job as Diana Allens and i’m surprised by that as i wasn’t expecting her to be good.

I love that there are more weapons this time around instead of up to 3 per catergory. :) I’m a bit disappointed that the lift in the citadel didn’t cause Shepard to moan about it being slow or say that they must have improved it. And the loading screens are excellent!

Almost hijacked a mech on Thursday, it’s very simple in theory, shoot the glass with sniper rifle and then kill the pilot, thus allowing you to hijack it.

But i’m going to ban myself from MP untill i complete the main story to avoid other players spoiling it for me as ME lacks a mute function, i had to mute the tv. :-/

Oh and a bit of Fallout but not given it a proper playthrough due to ME3 assuming direct control of my gaming.

    Not a lot for me this week;
Played through The Darkness 2 for a second time to mop up the remaining achievements. Good game just way too short, even with the co-op stuff included.
Other than that I played a bit more Killzone2 online and made a start on Vanquish, a game that has been sitting on my shelf un-opened for months.

Heading into town today so hopefully I can find a copy of either RE:ORC, Kid Icarus or Last Story :)

I’ve become quite addicted to TOMBlitz, playingit daily. I’m trying in vain to beat a friend’s score so i might eventually buy some crystals but for now i’m making do with the rationed crystals/lives.
Thanks to TOMBlitz my interest in tile-matching games has been re-invigorated and i played the Time Machine Rogue Pilot demo and then saw Bejewelled 2 for €2.69 so bought that. I liked TMRP demo more though so i’ll probably have to pick that up at some stage too! :/

I dipped into the PS+ stuff, Shift 2 ….. erm… oh right , i see, it’s called shift because the car’s weight seems to shift from side to side so much, right? Okay kidding aside i felt the nature of the handling was something i wouldn’t ever get comfortable with but i’ll give it another go before i reclaim the hdd space.

Anyway, i found some time to return to ME3 and have now reached the final assault. I feel that while the game is quite good, the scenario rushes you and limits you in a way that ME2 did not and so for me it has been a very different experience to the one i looked forward to after playing ME2. After ME, i’m looking forward to the new UFO:Enemy Unknown game(s) and the new Star Trek game – which is funny because when i first played ME2 it reminded me of both of them! :)

The I Am Alive demo whetted my appetite for more, although i’ll probably wait for a discount as i’m still a bit cautious after the review.
