Vita Firmware 2.00 Allows In-Game Web Browser

When the next PS Vita firmware update rolls around this week, it will bring with it PlayStation Plus for the handheld – cloud storage, auto downloads and free games. It’ll also feature a few new OS-level tricks and treats, one of which will be a vastly updated browser.

Confirmed this morning by Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios head Shuhei Yoshida, the browser will become an app with a smaller memory footprint, so you won’t have to quit out of a game to then jump into browsing.

“That’s little talked about but is a big change,” he said, “and the browsing itself is faster than the current one.” He praised the work of SCE’s Japanese developers.

You can read about PlayStation Plus for Vita here – we’re talking Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Gravity Rush And Chronovolt in the first batch of the Instant Game Collection, but firmware 2.00 also brings an email application and wireless content management, the latter is especially welcome.

The firmware is expected tonight.

  1. You could do this anyway with a trick, by going to twitter while in-game then clicking a link, it don’t force quit game. Not a surprise they made it much more simpler to browse while in-game now without using this trick. Don’t see why it wasn’t there before.

  2. Perfect for trophy guides :)

  3. The PS+ is a great idea, and i am sure customers are very happy about it, but i cant imagine it bodes well for the attachment rate on the consoles for late comers, and in turn it must really piss off some devs who spend years making a game to have some potential customers not bother picking them up in case they appear on plus as a freebie.

If i got a vita i would have prob spent £30 on Uncharted, but if its free i dont see why anyone now would bother picking it up, the whole thing is baffling to me.

Still nice to hear of better things coming to the vita, would be mnice to have the same love on the ps3 tbh though

    • considering Sony own the game I’m sure they no what there doing.

  4. Wonder how the auto cloud save game back up will work?
I thought all the game saves were tied in with the games and you couldn’t just select them on their own?
Also I wonder if my retail copy of Gravity Rush can be traded in and the save game transferred to the downloaded psn plus version??

  5. Hallelujah! At last!

  6. Quite exciting. I just hope those guys at the firmware team can keep doing what they do instead of going the PS3 route (ahem security and stability updates ahem)

  7. Hopefully the internet browser will be as good as newer smart phone browsers??? It should be, well it is 2012 now LoL:D

  8. Stacking apps would be nice too.

  9. This went live not 35 mins ago.
