What We Played #194: GTA V, OlliOlli 2 & Hand Of Fate

Greetings once again from the team here at TSA, as we’re back to deliver our gaming tales of glory, sacrifice, and… as you’ll see at the end of this post, a little creativity as well. So let’s dig right in and get to talking about those games.

Jim checked in first this week and talked about playing Hand of Fate, a multi-platform game he reviewed a few days ago. If you missed the review, he gave it a solid 8 out of 10 score and described it as a title that combines “deck-building games, RPGs, and adventure books.” Jim also played some some OlliOlli2, and although this was his first experience with this great franchise, he quickly saw what he was missing and said it’s one of his favorite games so far this year.

Finally, he played a bit of The Order: 1886 and, like most of us here at TSA, enjoyed the quick romp through Victorian London.

In truth, I wasn’t at all bothered by the overall length of the game though the ending could have done with some further explanation. Overall, it’s a great palette cleanser and one that doesn’t do the Elder Scrolls/Dragon Age thing of roping you in for a good sixty hours. Sometimes it’s nice to be able to blitz a game in a few sittings and be done with it.

If you follow the site very closely, you likely already know that Dom is one of our review machines, and that has largely dictated what he’s been playing this week. He started with the third episode of Resident Evil: Revelations 2, and he’s also been logging time with Xenoblade Chronicles 3D and the latest Inazuma game for review. Being the great father he is, Dom also played some Lego Harry Potter and Puppeteer with his boy, and he claims that he finally finished Assassin’s Creed Black Flag. I’m still waiting to see the trophies for proof.

He finished up his week with inFamous: First Light at the recommendation of myself and Aran, and he managed to prove just what great taste the two of us have. He mentioned how stunning the game looks, and that Fetch is a much more interesting character than Delsin.

Blair is up next and began his seven days of gaming with a bit of Antichamber, a game he describes as “good but needlessly frustrating in the way it uses puzzles.” He also played a bit of the new Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare maps, which you might remember he thought very highly of. He mixed some work and pleasure next by reviewing Far Cry 4’s Yeti DLC, and although he hasn’t cracked them open yet, he bought Bayonetta 1 & 2 for Wii U and is very much looking forward to playing them.

Finally, Blair went heisting with GTA V’s latest content update, which he wrote a few words about right here. If you can’t be bothered to click a link, here’s a few different words about it.

I’ve played loads of GTA’s Online Heists mode this week (I’ve only completed about three heists, but they’re a couple of hours each, at least). These are the game at its best, and the co-op element makes the planning a lot more fun.

Aran also played a bit of GTA V but spent his time going on rampages with a friend rather than stealing boatloads of money. He also polished off Hotline Miami 2 for review, which you might remember seeing here. Finally, he jumped on the OlliOlli2 bandwagon with the rest of us but very humbly admitted that he’s not exactly the best skateboarder.

As for me, I started Dying Light, which I’ve enjoyed so far but I’m not very far with it. After that, I also checked out GTA V’s new heists, and although I only did one heist with a friend, it was a lot of fun and provided a great boost in income over the normal missions. Finally, I started Ori and the Blind Forest. I don’t want to overstate my experience so far because I’m not even an hour into it, but the first section had my eyes glued to the screen so hard that I had to remind myself to blink. You can expect to see a review of it in the coming days.

Finally, we have Tuffcub. I’m not really sure what to say about what he submitted other than he took me very literally when I asked for ‘gaming stories’. So I’ll just leave it in the grey box below and you can see it for yourself. When you’re done, head the comments and let us know what you’ve been playing.

Once upon a time a publisher named Dethesba, generously provided a review code to a gaming website. It was for DLC for a horror game called “The Weevil Within”.
“Here!” shouted Mr. Editor-of-the-Website, “You reviewed the original game, take this code and get me some words by Friday!”
“Alas and alack, I have plans and shenanigans for Thursday evening,” said the talented and dashingly handsome review Cub. “But I have read the DLC is four hours long so I should be able to play it Wednesday, which is tonight, then get it written up Friday morn. Fear not Mr Editor-of-the-Website, I shall have your words for Friday!”
And so the intrepid and extremely well-dressed Cub scampered through the forest to his home, waving at the tweeting birds who were in full evensong. He soon reached his cave and carefully entered the code on his PlayStation 4 and waited for the download to start.
“Beep!” exclaimed the PlayStation, for it was a magical games console and could talk.”I’m afraid your DLC is 7.8 gigabytes, and at current speeds will take 55 hours to download!”
“Witchcraft!” exclaimed the heroic and very tall Cub, and pressed the magic X button to stop and start the download.
“Beep!” exclaimed the PlayStation, “Your DLC is 7.8 gigabytes, and at current speeds will take seven hours to download!”
The talented and fearless Cub pressed the X button many more times, he knew his 154mb fibre-optic broadband was the best in the forest and he should be getting top download speeds. He even did a quick broadband speed test and it was operating at full power.
Finally the PlayStation managed to talk to the PSN correctly, “Beep! Your DLC is 7.8 gigabytes, and at current speeds will take 55 minutes to download.”
The mighty Cub was happy and jumped for joy before scampering off to his kitchen to place his favourite pizza in the oven. Ten minutes later he checked the download was still running at top speed and then cast a spell. “Tellybox, HDMI2 to BBC1!” he shouted, twizzling his very large wand.
The picture changed to show four eager hopefuls who were hoping to become to the Master of Chefs. The Cub sat down and began to scoff his delicious pizza and watch the first episode of this year’s exciting competition.
An hour later, the happy Cub was full of pizza and cast the reverse spell, “Tellybox, BBC1 to HDMI2!”. The picture changed and the magic PlayStation intoned, “Beep! Your DLC is 7.8 gigabytes, you have downloaded 1 gigabye and at current speeds will take 34 hours to download.”
“Oh no!” exclaimed the Cub, or at least words to that effect. Someone must have cast a spell on the PSN again! And so for the rest of the evening the now getting quite tired but still looking handsome Cub sat and watched the DLC download, pressing X to stop and start the process whenever the evil magic returned to the PSN to make it slow.
After many hours, and almost at the time for bed for the Cub (he has a stressful day job and had to be up at 6am the following morn), the DLC had completed and was installed.
“Huzzah!” cheered the Cub, and slotted in the disc for The Weevil Within. “I think I can get in an hour’s gaming before bedtime,” he told his PS4.
“Beep!” said the PS4.
“Uh oh,” said the suspicious and well groomed Cub.
“Your game The Weevil Within…” said the PlayStation.
“Yes…” said the Cub, his fur begining to stand on end as he moved slowly towards the large baseball bat he kept in the room, just in case of burglars.
“Er, your game…” continued the PlayStation in a worried tone as it watched the impressively strong Cub pick up the baseball bat.
“Yes…” said the Cub through gritted teeth.
“Your game requires a 4.6gb update patch before the DLC will work,” said the PlayStation.
The End.

  1. The Crew finally decided to start working again so I finished off the story and gathered a few other miscellaneous trophies.
After getting together with a few others to get the 4 player trophy done in The Golf Club last weekend I got back into it and got the last few remaining trophies needed for the platinum.
Played quite a bit of OlliOlli 2 (although I was bunged up and fuzzy headed so could only manage it in short bursts … I have completed all the amateur levels and most of the pro levels so far but some of the challenges are ridiculously difficult).
Still playing Binding of Isaac … still impatiently waiting on the patch that will allow me to get the platinum.

  2. The Wolf Among Us platinum on Vita. Really hope they announce a sequel soon, although there might be the Minecraft game to come first, so could be waiting a while.

Some Dying Light, Yeti DLC on Far Cry 4, and the first (2-player) GTA Heist.

Also finished Never Alone with my son, so we started Stick It To The Man which he loves – very amusing point-and-click adventure.

  3. Been playing some more Extinction. Back to the public lobbies with my new master scavenger upgrade, and it’s been good mostly, but there are still some douches who either leave for no good reason, or are so overly temperamental, or most funny of all are high level but still get themselves killed with extreme ease. I might do one or two more games, but it’s winding down Extinction for now.

Also returned to Battlefield 3. Still enjoyable, getting into some fun sniper games and blow up shit.

And the usual GT6 meet, although it was hassled by a stupid bug preventing me from seeing another driver online. I may dive into F1 C.E over the weekend, as the F1 season brings me back in the mood again.

    • Cheers for helping me escape for the 1st time earlier in the week. Haven’t had much time for gaming this week due to a combination of working long hours, getting new windows & doors fitted to the house, plus helping me dad after he knackered his hip. Hopefully get a few hours on extinction this weekend to try for a few more trophies.

      • Feel free to PSN message me if you fancy some games. There’s only so much I can take of the public lobbies, although they’re a bit better at weekends, but still, I like to take my time and getting some of the trophies would be great.

  4. Been playing some dying light, just levelling up, I managed to fully level up all abilities but agility which is harder to upgrade but getting there.

Started playing GTA heist managed to get to level 14 thanks to random heist request & people being kind enough not to kick me out with my low ranking. Now I just need dedicated players with mics to play.

Also some devil may cry, looks so good on a 4k

  5. Another busy week so not much.

A Little bit of DriveClub, a little bit of GTA Online to show my mate the basics before we eventually attempt a heist & a little bit of Valiant Hearts.

That left room for HellDIvers which is pretty good so far.

  6. In a bizarre twist of events, I have played something other than Destiny this week! I know you have probably fainted out of pure shock by now, but when you recover, there is more.

Some Crew was played on Monday & much to my surprise actually worked rather well. This is a good thing of course as when it works, its damn fun & especially with friends. I did reconsider my ‘Avoid it’ vote after this, but then realised that the game likely wouldn’t be as much fun to others if they weren’t playing with our group & specifically Pixel_nme & his discussions about the rabbits in the game.

I have played some OlliOlli 2 which I am relatively impressed with its addictiveness even though I am a little poop at it. I have also finally started & gotten an hour & a bit into Dying Light & that has been really good so far. It’s like a better Dead Island, so am interested to see where Dead Island 2 is taken in the wake of it later this year.

Other than that, I might have played a bit Destiny here or there. I will definitely be playing some more later this evening though, as Xur finally has something I want. I have bought nothing from him but engrams for a few weeks now, so it will be refreshing to have something to actually buy with all those strange coins I have been amassing!

  7. Not as much this week due to work too. Managed to get the plat on Uncharted 3 after having to buy the disc because the PS+ version doesn’t have the co-op… Next up Uncharted 2 (yeah I know, doing things backwards as usual!)

Then fired up Medal of Honour: Warfighter and carried on the single player, but I’d forgotten how janky it was, either that or just blocked it out!

Otherwise I caved and used the 10% discount on the DriveClub season pass, and hit level 50 so just one more trophy left to get plat no 12 :)

  8. This week I’ve gone back to playing Garden Warfare which is such good Fun!
I’ve played a little Oli Oli 2,which I am awful at!
Also more Destiny, and I’ve finally got a bit more lucky with drops this week as I got the Truth from a nightfall strike and I got the Last Word from VoG :-)

    • At risk of sounding quite repetitive I think PvZ is one of the most fun games I’ve played on the PS4. Brilliant game

  9. I’ve finished the main story of Valiant Hearts. Charming game which I highly recommend.
Plodding through TLOU in short bursts, I haven’t really had time for a decent gaming session with it yet unfortunately.
Have re-started and almost finished Dust (another I highly recommend) which I will hopefully platinum over the weekend.

Most enjoyable week of gaming for me in quite a while.

  10. This week i’ve been continuing my revisit to TLoU via the remaster, and dilly dallying aplenty with the photo mode. I don’t think i will quite reach the magnitude of photo catologing that i did with The Order but i’ve gotten a few nice pics. Might post a few in the forums when i get organised.

Also playing some Far Cry 4, enjoying it in short sessions but not really feeling hugely engaged by it.

And CounterPoint is really growing on me now, i don’t think i’ll be finished with it when i’ve played the last mission.

I tried out the Pillar demo and i had no idea what was going on. I know TSA did a feature/review of it – which i only skipped because i presumed it was a pc game – honest injun :) – so i’ll check that out and maybe give it another go. But so far, so .. Hunnnh? :O

    • CounterSpy, not counterpoint.. o.O
