The Witness Will Be Priced At £29.99 In UK, $39.99 In North America

The price for The Witness has been confirmed as £29.99/$39.99/€36.99, with pre-orders going live from today on Steam and Humble. There will be no pre-order option on PSN due to that having to be set up quite some time in advance, which Thekla Inc didn’t know. There are no pre-order bonuses on offer though so you’re not missing out on any content should you decide to wait to purchase.

Jonathan Blow started work on The Witness over six years ago, and at the time was pegged to release on multiple platforms in 2011. The Witness got bigger than anticipated though, with the original 8 to 10 hour length becoming a thing of the past. Now The Witness will last around 80 to 100 hours, if you’re going for 100% completion. The Witness was supposed to be part of the PS4 launch line up, but missed that by quite a way as work continued on refining the title. It was only a few months ago that the January 26th release date was confirmed, and now that’s just a week away.

Yesterday a listing on the ESRB board had The Witness rated for Xbox One, though this was later confirmed to be a just in case measure by Jonathan Blow. There are no plans to release yet on Microsoft’s console.

  1. This one’s going to have to be a wait and see. If it reviews amazingly well I might be tempted but really I have so many interesting games I’ve yet to play that I probably don’t need to buy anything till this Autumn!

  2. Well, extending it from a 10 hour game to a 100 hour game certainly explains the long delay. Thing is, it doesn’t look like the kind of game i would want to play for 100 hours, more like the kind of game i would dip into occasionally for a half hour at a time.

  3. That’s a more attractive price than what I was able to find on GAME.co.uk. However, without any pre-order incentive I’ll no doubt wait for a price drop. As I don’t think it’s an AAA title, it’ll probably be reduced by £5-£10 fairly quickly, hopefully.

    • But what even is ‘AAA’ and why should that dictate price over game quality and depth?

Not expecting you to answer, I don’t think anyone knows really, strange times!

      • I don’t really understand the question, sorry! :/

I’m just trying to reduce my game expenditure, and since I don’t think this game will appeal to the masses like CoD/Fifa, I’m hoping it’ll get reduced in price a bit quicker so I can grab a bargain, as I am interested in it, it’s just I’ve already bought Life Is Strange and ZOMBI this week! In no way suggesting lower-profile games lack quality or depth, thinking totally from a financial perspective (read: I’m a bit skint). £29.99 is a pretty low RRP to begin with. :)

  4. I haven’t seen much gameplay but does anyone know if there is a plot? Or are you just completing random puzzles to get to the end? It kinda looks like one of those games where there’s a twist at the end and it turns out you were dead all along (in Limbo) and the puzzles are there to represent the struggles we face in life which must be overcome before you can enter Heaven. Or something.

I think I’ll be waiting for the reviews like others have said. I’m definitely interested but I need to know more.

    • Oh no you just spoilt Limbo for me. Never mind I’ve been playing it since it came out on Ps3 ;-)

      • No I meant The Witness looks like the kind of game where the plot turns out to be that you’re in Limbo. Not that the plot of Limbo the game is that you’re in Limbo. Although I suppose the game Limbo couldn’t really be about anything else otherwise it would be called Creepy black and white game set on earth. Thinking about it, I cant even remember what happens in the game Limbo. Is anyone else sick of me saying the word Limbo? If I had a pound for every time I said the word Limbo I’d be rich. Well, I’d be £7 better off at least.

      • Haha I read it slightly wrong, sorry. I was in a busy queue at the time.
